I kept hearing how bad summon Necro is, and while I’m still at lvl 26, but I feel much stronger than I ever was with my druid ot sorc on eternal. The minions do good damage and tank hits very well for me and shdow damage buffs their damage and does pretty good damage itself, I’m doing WT2 like its nothing.
Does it really fall off that bad later or are minions actually viable now?

They kinda are for normal gameplay even at higher lvl but you wont push keys with it or you wont kill uber lilith. Also as soon as you switch to bone or shadoblight builds you will see how low your minion dmg was.
Minions barely scale with any multipliers you have on your gear, so once you get to sacred and ancestral items, they start doing next to no damage compared to any ability you cast.
Realistically the only thing that makes them better is the unique ring, and even that is only because rings damage scales with your multipliers, not minions.
Oh yeah it’s going to drop off…
I can tell you it is fine at about 65 also, if you know what you are doing with gear.
I did a world boss and lost one skellie at the very end.
Just look for affixes for attack speed and minion health and/or damage, and shield and total armor always helps too.
I do run Blood minion so my minions get healed from me picking up blood orbs too.
They do ok against same level content.
Main issue is that many of the stats they inherit from the player are at 30%. So at the point where you start getting significant amounts of other multipliers (crit, attack speed, passives etc) other builds get each full multiplier while minions only get 30% of each, if anything at all, so fall off with the square/cube/etc relative to those other builds with each multiplier they have no/partial access to.

Should be okay, unless you’re trying to push high level nightmare dungeons or do uber lilith. Then you’d have to swap builds.
Edit: There’s actually a couple decent minion builds that can go up to nightmare 60, if you don’t mind cookie cutting someone’s build off of youtube, assuming you even care to push nightmare dungeons.
You should check out kripparians sumon necro build. Its surprisingly good without mendeln and uses golem.

Aside from some annoying QOL issues minions are fine until higher level NM dungeons.
This right here.
The damage falls off fast and there is too little documentation about how the minions inherit stats, how they deal damage, etc. The game NEVER lets you see your individual minion stats.
By the time I was 40 it became very apparent that my damage from dots was vastly outpacing the damage from the minions themselves. Their primary purpose became being meat shields and generating corpses.
Minions in late game (if you keep them alive via hardened bones / cult leader with deadraiser / +~250% minion health via gear) are good for -
- Mendeln delivery systems
- Deathspeaker delivery systems
- Corpse generators
- Essence replenishers
- Max essense
- Sever damage
- Meat shields
Don’t even bother trying to actually make them do damage themselves, been tried a hundred times but paragons are borked and 30% transfer = waste of time
The 30%transfer argument makes no sense. You need to remember it’s 30%but you have up to 13 minions so it Balences out. If minions took 100% from the player they would be unstoppable and way to op
Yeah you’d think the math would be 11 x 30% = 330%, and I’m sure the devs imagined this would be the case

At level 26 you can’t judge any builds accurately.
YOu will be able to see if it good or not as soon you reached lvl50 and have all your skill points spent and hit at least WT3
But to get an even more accurate picture, you need to get to WT4
I have done a minion necro too this season. Because for me, if i play necro, i want to have minions running around.
I started with a blood lance - summoner build. But was not great, not terrible. Now trying and experimenting with a shadow damage summoner build (since shadow skills are actually the once which have the best synergy with summons. It is way better. But sadly the minions have 2 major issue:
- They have zero survivability.
- They rely on corpses to re-summon them. Not having any survivability for them wouldn’t be an issue if they would be at least re-summon on their own via cooldown like it was in D3. Because this way the summoner necros are great or can be great for horde clearing. But they are terrible in bosskilling aspect.
No that wouldn’t be how it is. You don’t add them up it’s just 30% of the necro for each minion not 100% the minions have a mind of they’re own that’s the biggest problem if you could focus target easier they would be much better. Minion necros are very good boss killers if you give them health upgrades

Yes i have never had a problem killing a boss. Highway i did was nm70 prepatch it was the hordes i had trouble with but bosses were easy if you stack defensive stats for minions instead of glass cannons
