So, I was wondering (and didn’t really see official info yet?), if you don’t get the VOH xpac what features you will not be able to experience? Class and new zones well yeah, I get it. What else will be impacted? Are there any news yet?
Basically, what happens when VOH hits and you don’t have it?

its in the VoH faq. the base game will still receive updates. certain things, like the citadel arent accessible tho. You also wont be able to access nahantu but i guess that goes without saying.
just for future references tho, d4 was supposed to receive yearly expansions. If thats going to happen… well we will have to find out. but yea, there are going to be restrictions.

As far as I know if you don’t buy the expansion you won’t get the new SpiritBorn class, the new Nahantu area map and you won’t be able to use Runewords system (because it related to SpiritBorn sharing skills)
Correct me if I’m wrong…
Looking at the expansion features now I see:
- New Region
- Continue Campaign
- New Mercenaries
- Dark Citadel
So, most likely this is what’s gonna be locked behind xpac along with new class, and as somebody said Runewords?
Anyhow, thanks for the responses.

im not buying the xpac, ill let ya know in the 2nd week of october what i cant do.
I’m sure I wont be able to join my buddies that will be in the new dungeons/world boss and helltides.
Honestly after this last ptr, I’m not sure even if ill continue to play d4. It seems d4 just lost its “fun” factor for me, i went from a wield crazy haired adam sessler 5 excitement down to a 1 this last ptr. Even Morgan Webb would have gave it a thumbs down

You will not be able to experience the feature where Blizzard reaches in your wallet and removes money for a dressup costume for the new hero which you will not have.

You can bet Blizz will do lots to make your DLCless as much unenjoyable as they can…
All “new cool” things will be locked behind DLC

no spiritborn
no mercenary
no runewords
no nahantu
no campaign continuation
no dark citadel
no kurast undercity
yes max level 60
yes paragon 300
yes party finder
yes new paragon board
yes new skills
yes new passives
yes new uniques
yes new glyphs
yes new mythics
yes new legendary powers
yes new gem tier
so basicly everything currently in the PTR except the runewords.
so if you can live without the new class / region / region exclusive activities / runewords
you can do without the expansion.
in the partyfinder you can filter out VoH content, people on gamepass wont get automatic access to VoH as far as i’m aware so plenty of people will not get the expansion.
If you compare it to diablo 3 they made it a lot better in terms of exclusive content.
you cant really play D3 without reaper of souls, but you can still enjoy most of D4 without VoH.
Thats not to say they wont try to force you into VoH every way possible.
- New character select, with Spiritborn. But oh no there is a lock on it. You can look but you cant play until you buy VoH
- Everytime you open your map, theres this big new fancy area, but you cant go there so please buy VoH
- Oh the world boss is spawning, i need that for my seasonal journey. But oops it spawns in Nahantu. guess you cant play. please wait another 3.5 hours. unless… please buy our expansion.
- Hey here is a nightmare dungeon key because you need those masterworking materials. but why is there a lock on it. Oops its a nahantu dungeon. guess you wont be using this. you know what would help. buy VoH. Mephisto demands it.
- you join a party for some pit runs. The party then wants to run some nightmare dungeons. oh but you cant go into Nahantu. Guess you’ll get kicked out.

if this is what are you asking, the barb fans will still complain and whine in the forums of how underpowered barb is. Does this make sense?
Playing the PTR made me aware of runewords being expansion-exclusive and this is the one thing I heavily dislike, for a specific reason: There already seem to be imbalances between classes each and every season, now there will possibly also be imbalances within classes
This probably wouldn’t be much of an issue for a singleplayer-only game with optional multiplayer content, e.g. when playing cooperatively with friends. With Diablo 4’s shared world though, there will inevitably be Barbarians and Necromancers and characters of every other base game class running around together, having access to differing gameplay mechanics
Limiting access to Spiritborn-exclusive runes, same as to the class itself, would be fully understandable in this regard. Limiting access to runes in general not so much…
Content exclusivity is what I would understand expansions to be for, gameplay mechanic exclusivity might be a little “unfortunate” though. I don’t even want to imagine what could happen multiple years/expansions from now, when some players still only own the base game or a mixture of certain expansions…
If a future expansion introduces new mechanics, would people purchasing just that expansion, and not Vessel of Hatred, then only have access to that expansion’s mechanics without ever getting access to runes…?!
