This is something that always gripes me about Season Passes. I’m someone who tends to play a game pretty hardcore for a couple of weeks, and then take a break. I find that’s the most enjoyable way to game, at least for me.
Because of that, I find Season Passes are a waste of time and money. If I already know I’m not going to reach level 100 (or whatever you want to call it) in the Season Pass, which is where the coolest rewards always are, then why even bother?
Which is a Lose-Lose scenario. It’s a “Lose” for me, because that’s all content I’ll never have a chance to unlock, and it’s a “Lose” for Blizzard, because it means I’m not paying to support the game.
To me, making PAID Season Passes remain available permanently is going to be much more enticing.
From the players’ perspective, it means I can play at whatever pace I most enjoy, and it suddenly becomes much more worth my money to buy a Pass because I can rest assured that I can eventually earn its contents.
And from Blizzard’s perspective, it makes the Season Pass a far more worthwhile purchase from players. In fact, even if the “seasons” themselves were relatively short for Free players, it would still be compelling to pay for the full Pass because you know it’s no going to run out on you.
My thinking?
After you pay for a Season, once the next one rolls out, you have an option somewhere to select which Season you wish to be “active”. That way, you’re only making progress on a single Season at any given time, which removes any incentive to just “wait until you’re making progress on multiple seasons at the same time”.
Maybe the current season sees faster progress as well, while progressing on a previous Season would do so at a slower pace, encouraging players to play when content is fresh and new, without expressly forcing it.
Food for thought.
