Ideas on how to introduce Sets, what do you think?

  1. Release Set aspects, and have 2 , 4 , 6 piece set bonuses via your aspects
  2. Find a full set in game, once obtained, extract the set bonus from the item and put onto your character via a cube
  3. Introduce Cloaks into the game, Collect Set pieces , extract the essence from each piece and put onto the cloak, now your cloak has the set bonus on it. Also if they introduced Cloaks into the game, they could sell cloak cosmetics
  4. the traditional way most arpgs introduce sets, but it would be hard to not make all other items irrelevant once sets are introduced, so this would have to be accounted for.

What do you all think, if not any of these ideas, do you guys have any cool ways to introduce sets or something similar?

can you first and foremost explain why diablo 4 needs sets?

In an interview with Rhykker, given at the launch of the game, Joe Shelley said they plan sets for the future, because their initial draft wasnt ready to be implemented.
Rhykker also made a predictment in a recent video: the 2026 expansion will bring set items.

D3.8 is on the forge!!!

well idk if the game does need sets, but if they were to be introduced what are some good ways to do so.

Aspects as they currently exist are far more versatile and less restrictive than sets in previous Diablo games. Consider:

In Diablo 2 most items did not have anything equivalent to a set power, so equipping set items with good stats until the player had enough set items to activate an ability.

In Diablo 3 most, but not all legendaries had something equivalent to a D4 aspect. The items themselves were sort of a mix between D4’s uniques and legendaries, with some fixed and some random affixes.
In some cases it was worth equipping a set item prior to having enough for a bonus since it may have good stats and may be replacing an item that does not have a legendary power, or one that has an undesirable one.

The problems you need to solve for to even consider set items in D4 is two-fold: what does a set item offer that cannot already be handled better by legendaries with aspects, and what reason would I have to equip a set item prior to having enough for a bonus?

Let’s look at the latter. If we go with D3’s design, a 2-piece set bonus has to be at least as strong as two aspects to be viable, and I would never equip a single set item as it means losing an aspect. So sets in this mindset have no point in existing since they are worse alone than a legendary and equivalent together.

So we could solve by saying, okay single piece items have either really good affix ranges or something comparable to an aspect. But now they are stronger combined than legendaries once we add in the bonus, so now we make a case that legendaries don’t need to exist.

So now we come back to the first issue: what do set items offer that current itemization doesn’t?

Absolutely nothing, without completely reworking how they have it worked compared to historical examples.

honetly, in d4s scenario sets are just a lazy way to gear up. You dont need to pay attention to the item stats, as you have no control over them.

i find the demand for sets kinda fun sometimes here, people always mention how they want to do “special builds”, and “play their way”. All that and sets doesnt work together at all.

if one wants sets, heck, open up any meta build site. Get these items and call it a set i guess.

we already have sets. legendary aspects are sets broken down so you can mix and match them and create your own builds.

Actually so far aspects as presented in D4 have been badly done and are🥱

The sets don’t make sense to add it, they already said that it’s like another layer of power, what’s left over in this game is power xd, they should add things to retain players and some leaderboards, a bit of crafting, etc. things that can change the game and not be so boring, the sets weren’t going to bring any benefit. If they implement them, let it be like in D2, which only makes sense at low levels.

Yea, the issue with sets is:
The game will set us on a slippery slope towards more power creep, then likely requiring more item slots; further lopsiding an already imbalanced game.

true, i really want to see some type of end game progression system for NMD’s , something for us to progress through with all our power, Would of been nice if they brought end game bosses to d4 in the way they did in d2 and d3, were you go through zones to get to bosses, then they could of added timers so we can do speed boss runs for competition, that would of been fun, but the current iteration of bosses thats not possible

fair, i wouldnt mind sets if they are basically “useless”. i mean who uses sets really in d2? sorcs maybe for the magic find?

but yea, why add them then anyway in diablos current iteration lol.

Really depends on the tier they are, they for end game? Then they should be rarer then mythics if your getting set bonuses on top of gear stats, if it’s not for the end game … What’s the point you will never need it anyway.

well, not in the current d4 for sure. Tho i wonder, people keep saying endgame - then they say d4 has no endgame.

Did anyone ever think that nothing is endgame if there is no early, or midgame?

D4 has an endgame it’s just very lackluster, a few bosses and the pit, maybe undercity, honestly introduce 20 new bosses next season that aren’t one shots with decent mechanics and I bet tons of people would come back

and thats where id disagree. Without an early or midgame, there cant be an endgame.

What we currently have now is… well, just a game. Get to lvl 60 in 30 hours and there you are. endgame.

It would really be good if they were only used for leveling but then they had no influence on torment, sorcerers usually use such rasha’s equipment in d2 for the mf and the resis, but it is not relevant because the sorceress does not depend on such rasha’s equipment.

been quite a bit since i touched d2r, let alone d2 lol. but yea, i can imagine d2r has more options now that make rashas obsolete ^^

True, how it’s about to be 8 seasons and an expansion in and there is only 4-5 bosses is crazy imo
