I was kind of watching this thread since I didn’t quite follow the points you were making.
Now mind you, I’m only looking at this from the point of view from someone who has only played with a Necromancer so far. You mention the lack of build diversity, but how so?
Again using my Necromancer as an example. I see a few different ways I could play this, and from there a few more options. For example, if I go with minions. I can go with a build where I hide behind and support my minions. And that’s what I’m doing this play through.
I picked the spells that allow me to generate as many fleshpiles as possible. This being because I can easily continue to create or heal my minions by simply using fleshpiles. I then picked blight which allows me to act as a support to my minion, allowing me to weaken what my minions attack. I further specialized in this role by picking and turning corpse explosion into blighted corpse explosion. Which further allows me to strengthen my minion’s ability to do damage.
And I could go on… by contrast my wife went with an offensive minion builds that gives her a bit more tank, but has her actively doing damage to mobs along with her minions. And her build honestly varies quite a bit from mine.
As I continue to look at the builds, I will eventually want to try a different necromancer that gets away from minions, and uses physical abilities. Which may end up sacrificing any minion abilities for passives that bulk up my character and focus on direct damage abilities.
That by itself is options. As for difficulty, I found that I had to ramp things up because this build I’d worked out allowed me to smash the heck out of things so I’ve spent most of the game on tier 2.
This said, my experience differs from yours, and will because as you’d indicated… you had arthritis and two strokes which may limit and change your play. And that is simply what it is. Given this, perhaps you may want to pick a class that allows you to play to your abilities.
That said, what class are you playing? I never saw it mentioned. :x
