Made new character in diablo 2. It’s strange how 20 year old outdated game feels more meaningful than what we have now.
It feels like every new release is like made by Disney. Where all atmosphere is gone? Where all fun gameplay is gone?

If this is a comparison to D4, there’s plenty of atmosphere.
Fun is subjective.
I’m willing to admit D2 is probably the better game, but fun for me in these games is farming gear for a build and getting to use it in an enjoyable way. D2 does not offer that on a reasonable timescale at all, and my days of thinking incredibly low drop rates = content are way over.
Item progression in D4 ends way to early, but the elements I need to put together a build I want are always within reach.
I do miss the more purposeful combat, especially D1, where positioning and surroundings mattered.
D2 was designed to be a game by people who play games and wanted the game to be as great or better than the original.
D4 was designed to be manipulated to generate revenue by people who DO NOT play games and only care about the money. They only want the “game” to make more money than previous iterations. They don’t even view it as a game.
D4 will never be a great game like D2 to actual gamers. The basic foundation for its creation doomed that prospect from the beginning.
Not sure we’ll see you again. For sure there are differences. Maybe tell us which of those are meaningful for you that contributed to your decision. Maybe something in d4 that you do like or what you’d like to see from d4’s direction.
Figure you’ve got some level of interest in d4 to have bothered trying it out and dropping by the forum for a few minutes.
For me I struggle with the stash system in d2 and prefer something more modern.
Tetris stash was fine.
Elemental wheels were fine.
Fighting diablo on top of molten lava in his lair was fine.
Secret cows were fine.
Uber slaying was fine.
Skill systems was fine.
Classic classes were fine.
Leveling system was fine.
99 being the goal was fine.
Set items were fine.
The old rune system was fine.
None of that is in d4, that is not fine.
And that’s fair enough for folks that have those priorities for the game they want to play. I can understand the frustration of d4 not going in the direction you’d hoped on those points as it stands today.
because one is a truly ARPG that set the world benchmark,
the other is a blasting ARCADE game.
Not for me. Theres nothing to fear while romaing through the maps. The graphics and music can be as dark as they want to be… its just an ololololol (adjusted emotional text for future gen) 1-shotting everything shooter on two feet destroying this atmosphere from scratch.
