I really don't understand - is this ARPG just not for me?

In every ARPG I’ve played a significant amount of time in (D3, POE, LE), the general progression through the levelling process is such that pretty much any build works and feels “fine” through levelling (ok, with POE you might have to follow a guide because of respeccing and complication issues).

You might not be particularly zoomy, but it won’t feel like a slog, and won’t be particularly difficult at this stage except for some boss mechanics and challenging elites.

It will likely change a lot in mid/late game, but you can just do the content, get through the campaign, explore and play how you want and enjoy some skills. The game was also advertised as “your class, your way”.

I expect certain builds to level better, of course - and drop luck can make you switch in a heartbeat.

Why then - even levelling with what maxroll considers S and A tier levelling sorcs - is everything SUCH a slog? It is so unfun to constantly be managing resources; to have insane and frankly overpowered burst damage following by 15+ seconds of zdps (in chain lightning’s case, a lot worse). 80% of my attacks are basic attacks.

I want to get to the part where all the aspects come into play, paragon progression and all that fun stuff - but getting there is a serious downer every time I play the game for an hour or two, to the point I’ve just had to turn it off and leave it for season 1 to see how it is then.

I don’t want to start off as a total normie and BECOME strong, I want to feel strong but become a different type of strong through the game - and the slog come BY CHOICE as I attempt harder and harder content.

Am I missing something here? Is the 1-50 experience supposed to be this dull? Is this just the direction of the game, and I should stay clear and stick to other ARPGs?

I don’t feel like it’s a slog until I get to the bosses.

Currently playing rogue and I just gather up a million npcs, drop 2 bombs and everything dies. Single target though… Man it took me like 8 minutes to kill andariel alone. And the gear is constantly upgraded and have plenty of affixes to increase the damage of my build.

Also, I dont like the fact this has multiplayer mode enabled 24/7 but it feels so damn empty 24/7. Hardly see anyone at all. No chat channels either. Super unpolished game imo. You can’t go from D3 (yea yea 10 years of updates brooo!!!) to this… You shouldve started where d3 shined and built off that. So much QOL missing.

Here is why people cannot D4, it’s new, most of the information is gonna be click bait especially by YouTube money grab streamers who can care less about a game.

I don’t understand. It’s not a slog at all. I’m even playing the worst class in terms of early leveling yet it’s easy and fun. Enjoyed my Bear build now i’m playing Earth mage. My only critic is that the horse mechanic come online WAAAY TOOO LATE. Only slog part of the game is walking, walking and walking. Too much walking in the game. Horse is great. I hope it’s only locked for first playthrough and it’s immediately available on new characters and in new seasons.

Edit: BTW i evolved my earth mage in to earth storm hybrid. I will do werewolf and storm builds later.

If you are having trouble i recommend you to fill 2 tab of storage with yellow items in WT1 and then do some synergistic build then go up to WT2. You don’t even need defensive skill in WT1.

The horse is messing up the experience, blocking movements, and exacerbating poor performance with old hardware. You will run into issues with the "move with your allies’ quests.

Your senses do not lie, it is indeed an unfun slog.

This game feels different on different classes.

So I have played POE and I enjoy it and it’s complexity. But it is flawed in that all mobs are trash until you get to a boss. And then that boss has some cheap one shot ability.

I like that this game was not that. At least on Sorc to 50. Rogues also requires thought in building. I did not play Druid too far in but I would think it requires thought in your build and gear also.

But if you want POE easy, play Necro. It is a different game for Necro. That doesn’t mean it will not hit a wall later. But the class is built for strength in the early game at least. I hear minions fall off…but I don’t buy it, because I just don’t feel like anything is really testing me on this class. I am at lvl 36 now.

It can be fun to feel overpowered. But I think the challenge on Sorceress was better overall.

Oh also I would add you need to look at more than the passive tree nodes here, gear is important and it will determine fights.

it doesn’t get better at 70 unfortunately, this is the game.

I bet they come out with horse shoe passive to move through enemies unhindered like in d3 for $24.99 in the shop. Oh noes I gave them killer money grab.

Terrible balance from the start and as many of us were warning before: NOBODY does level scaling properly.

In D4 you cannot just grab a class, play with skills, change up builds as you go, mix and match ability types… even while leveling.
If you fail to FOCUS the 2 or 3 useful builds of a class and aim all your equipped items at it you are simply going to struggle… hard.

Rogue can smash AOE groups with most skills and vulnerable up but will slow down on bosses.
Barbarian is the eazy mode which is why so many people play it: You really only have 2 choices and all your gear just syncs easier to a class that is a bit too strong.
Necro has it the worst, actually using Minions makes you weak which is the whole damn point of the class - I leveled 1-52 this way, changed builds, attempted again at 60 and again at 70 using the best possible rolls I had found for summoner and minion builds are just terrible compared to using them as a Dark/Bone based sorc.

Honestly normal dungeons should have been easier at every tier seeing how you can’t keep going once you level past the tier cap. Nightmare dungeon tiers should have been increasingly better experience and challenges as well as the point when a “build” actually becomes needed.
Instead we have “normal” dungeon builds where you have to focus for hours and hours to make it even decently fun to keep playing and hope you enjoy that build cause changing it up is… well let’s just say Forgotten Souls are not as common as they should be.

It’s not you, this is exactly how I feel playing sorc, just dropped it at 50.

Just going to play rogue for now and have insane mobility, damage, and tankiness. I expect some major patches are going to roll in before seasons because everything is pretty whack right now.

I’m glad it isn’t just me. I wanted to play Sorc because - well - I enjoy ranged, sorc combat style.

For one, Sorc doesn’t even feel ranged, since everything is on you pretty quick anyway - and two, the synergy just feels super off. Like, OK I can clear elites and packs with no problem with my synergy - but then what? use all my mana to kill a trash mob and spam basic attacks until cooldowns again and again? That is not what I thought I was signing up for.

EDIT: This is levelling, not an end-game dungeon, it shouldn’t feel like that at level 28

Is it just mana generation? Because honestly that is not an issue for me, my Sorc is at 51 currently.

My issue is, outside of Ice Shards, nothing really hits that hard.
They nerfed Hydra, They nerfed Ice Blades. Not sure if Meteor was ever good.
And this is why Boss fights feel like a Slog. With lower sustain you should hit harder as a tradeoff. But Sorc just has both low sustain and low single target damage…so you end up runnnig around a lot.

I played Sorc in server slam. She was one of the best. Damage is pretty high and you can do passive damage with burn, blizzard, firewall etc effects while navigating/dodging.

Mana generation is definitely a chunk of the issue but I don’t even feel ice shards (one of the builds I’ve tried) felt particularly punchy without the synergy either. I feel like the utility skills are almost too impactful, to the point that their large cooldowns make everything feel bad.

Sure low levels are easy, it’s the boss fights where the class’ flaws are exposed.
Sorc is fine against the mobs.
But something like Curator or Duriel, is a lot of running around.

Not sure if nerfed since then. I tried in the first beta and it was a LOT more fun. Plus, 1 Blizzard + 2 right-clicks = 0 mana.

Happen to mis-click / miss your target? Too bad, that’s 1/3 of your mana pool please.

You can’t be more wrong. Rares in PoE are way more deadly than bosses with the right affix combination. Some rares can even be harder than pinnacle bosses even.

Gotta git good man. Good luck.

First of sorry for my bad english but i’m also pretty boring atm and not because i play too much i start playing D3 when dlc launch i play alot more compare to D4 and when i’m feeling stale i create new class and have fun again and time to time back to my old class i get excited again in D4 i swith to new char the problem couldn’t be more clearer and already thinking about waiting for seasonal to try again

Wait a week or two you see people complain pop up alot more i’m sure of it

Until those average / casual enjoyer finish the campaign and question themself what next? then learn the horrible slog know as helltide and enchantment cost&big spike of exp need to level up let see how many will leave the game by then

Everything pretty much neatly craft to waste your time as much as possible imo i noticed this really early on in each town everything so far apart at first i feel it pretty good immersion or smth like that but after i’m reach tier 4 and level 81 atm i just start to realize that it only exist to waste my time instead there so much running and walking around and less of a fighting especially helltide people that design to be this way should get fire you run around kill small group of enemy hop on a horse and go next camp and do it again it so mind boggling dumb

Do you know the best part for helltide? it is not optional content unless you don’t want to reforge any gear yeah since they put the mats you need to reforge in helltide
