Making twinks was one of my favorite parts of D2, and other RPGs like EverQuest and WoW, but it’s virtually impossible in D4. In D2 getting a unique on one character and then going to level up a new character until they can try it out and have fun building around it was how I spent a good amount of my time- not pushing to level 99. Getting that power spike and change in gameplay when I was able to put it on was a great feeling.
But with level reqs being based on the character you’re playing, you can’t take those frostburns and try them out on a low level character after meeting some minimal requirements. It felt bad getting a unique and not being able to have fun with it on a twink.
And with the ultra-rare uniques currently set to only drop from 85+, even if you were to get one that you wanted to put on another character, they would have to already have gone through just about all content in the game before they could use it.
Issues/solutions-
I understand item power/levels on t3/t4 are higher than in t1/t2, and that giving a drop that was intended for level 60+ would have too high of stats for a low level character. But this isn’t an unsolvable problem.
WoW had account bound gear that scaled down the damage/stats of gear to be appropriate to the character level so that it was still a very good item. D4 already uses scaling for characters and the monsters they fight, so why not also have the item level/power of the item also scale down to the current level of the character? They still get to use the unique affix, which is the crux of the unique.
You can still twink, but you have to have a main of the same class first.
For example:
Get a rogue to level 60; max out Obols
Start a new rogue, get them to level 5, gamble on gear until you get a yellow
Throw yellow in stash
Get on level 60 again and imprint a legendary DUNGEON aspect from the CODEX onto the yellow gloves
They’ll maintain the same level 5 requirement but have a level 60 affix, so for the sake of example it will say “Poison damage increased by 680 [5 - 32]”
This only works with certain aspects, they have to be dungeon won aspects, and the class you’re trying to imprint the gloves on has to be the same class you’re trying to twink. Pay attention to the tooltip when you go to imprint the item to make sure you’re getting a huge power bump; some of these are just flat out static from level 1 - 100.
Character level requirement on items unnecessarily scaling with your character level feels bad.
kills alt creation AND trading.
preferably i would like them to just open trading up, but since they wont, they should just make max character level requirement on rares and legendaries like 75. uniques can go higher but no reason for rares/legs to
Well it’s same old dgsht Loot 2.0 issues. Same stupid mechanic that was in D3 but now out of nowhere you should spend 150h to get max level and not 2min.
i started to save twink gear when I hit WT4, then quickly realized item level requirement increased as my level increased.
there’s one exception path right now. you can imprint codex powers onto low level gear with your high level main. unfortunately, most the offensive codex powers that scale with level are limited to barbarian and rogue.
Agreed, it was fun to find stuff for other classes. They should have a loot toggle setting for class specific and all loot. Level of other class items could be set to drop to be used at levels lower than the current character.
This really feels like a neutered version of D2, mixed with a bit of D3 and Immortal.
Would also like to see a more varied skill tree, instead of the illusion of choice it currently provides. Give us skill points for every level, they shouldn’t stop at 50, plus the bonuses from renown. Hell even give us a paragon point from 1-50 so you can jump into the paragon system with something to look forward to.
I miss it too. My main character is lvl 100 and I want to try other classes. I have a great Pazorplate in my stash. What a great twink item! Nope. Level 80. Why not let us remove item level like we could in D3. Even restrict it to one item per twink. It’s not like this stuff is trade-able. Why not?
In Diablo 3 they have something called a “gem of ease” which when you socket into a “horadric cube” turns any items into level 1. Or, soon, an altar power unlock that unlocks all items to be level 1 (if they bring it back like before).
