We have computers that are 1000x faster than 20-30 years ago.
We have multibillion companies, with teams that are 100x bigger (“9000 people contributed to D4”).
We do have amazing graphics and world detail.
However, somehow, we can’t have decent gameplay. No progress here, quite the opposite. Not only can’t we achieve what we already had 10-20 years ago (whether be it D2, D3 or what competition has done) and take the best of it. And to think even further, to achieve new heights? Crazy talk.
To think of difficulty system, which would cater to all needs? That’s some rocket science.
Some basic common sense QoL? We’ll be back in several months.
Are you making a game or building a nuclear power plant?
I think the game play and combat in D4 is actually quite good. It’s fast paced and fluid without feeling clunky for the most part. It’s the loot / reward system that sucks, not the combat.
For those who grew up on or around farms, They could tell you a story about milking the cash cow. And there is a lot of thirsty investors waiting in line.
The in-between felt like fluff so I’ll ignore it. Okay. You’re unhappy we can, as a species, do incredible things but yet somehow they did not cater this game 100% to your personal taste. So it’s all trash. For everyone. Cos you feel that way, personally.
Think I’ll shy away from pointing out the ridiculous nature of this tangent. The points are there on their own.
My reaction would have been different had you actually provided ONE single idea in regards to how you feel things could be improved.
Couldn’t agree more the combat in d4 is best in class there’s no competition there but the itemisation lets it down and I’m not sure how they fix it either.
But I’m sure they will land on something good at some point
It’s fine. I’m just venting. I have provided constructive opinions and ideas about a dozen times during my limited activity here. During the last campfire chat, I actually felt like at last some of them have been read! But the PTR is (specifically the difficulties, other things seem fine) a dissapointment. And it seems like it’s not just a question of fine-tuning, but a deeper philosophical question of what the game is supposed to be. That’s not easy to fix.
If you want to make a game that has a decent gameplay, you make a game that has decent gameplay. If you want to make a game that returns maximum profit at minimum cost, you do so. Thing is, you can only optimize for either of the two. And Blizzard is a for profit company, not a for fun game designer club.
I would have thought by today standards, I would be able to go into my dungeon (basement) and don on my plate mail armor and sword, jump into a virtual 3d room and fight diablo in game!
Not only can’t we achieve what we already had 10-20 years ago (whether be it D2, D3
I don’t know buddy…you’re mixing feelings with years of progress in game industry. First and second Diablo were great because they were first in their genre. So every new feature was a fresh air.
D3 was quite meh upon releasing because…(hundreds of reasons). The game became good after DLC and then another multiple seassons.
Between D2 and D4 the genre came a long way, so everyone was expecting all those things will be ready upon D4 release.
D2 had basically no end game until LoD, you were chasing few uniques until that.
D4 made a huuge progress during 1 year, and the 2.0 version will move it even further. If the team will sustain those changes during the next year, the game will be the best Arpg ever
I never put D2 on pedestal, it was always a love-and-hate thing. But there’s no denying that some things it did very well. I had discussions here last year, I pointed out that D2 pre-expansion was crude and disappointing, people forget, and that it took time to develop D2 LoD which changed the game very much (making the analogy with the state of D4). I defended current Blizzard. D4 has many things going for it. I’m open for new things and gameplay styles. The only thing I have been adamant about since I started playing the game (and hasn’t been fixed for incomprehensible reasons) was this: I want the game to be difficult, not patronisingly easy, I want to explore the open world, do the quests, campaign, to get my a&& kicked 10 times while conquering strongholds etc. PTR campfire promised this. And it’s the same as always.
And before anyone says: “there are difficult things, what are you talking about?” - I don’t care about some pits, abatoirs, even NMDs which which I get teleported to via sigils without even knowing where they are. All this is side content (which is fine) duct-taped to the main game. I want to immerse myself in the Diablo world, that was so beatifully crafted by artists, but remains unused.
Huge progress in a year is 4 bosses to you? The pit is timed nmds and IH is a bigger scaled event that we already had in the open world lol. What huge progress for a years time?
