Higher VRAM allocation than what my GPU has

The moment I set my texture quality to high, VRAM allocation starts steadily climbing from 7gb to around 10gb. I have an 8gb GPU. When the allocation surpasses 8gb I start noticing stutters.

Process usage only ever shows up to about 5.3gb in use while this is happening.

VRAM allocation creeps upwards when textures are set to medium as well, but not over 8gb and I haven’t had the same stutters.

What can I do on my end? This has been reported many times since the few recent betas.

That’s texture pooling and fairly normal. An 8gb GPU isn’t enough for high textures, without problems and stutters. The stuttering that you’re seeing is probably it having to swap assets back to the GPU from the regular ram, or having to reload from your drive.

If you don’t want to upgrade to a GPU with more vram, the best thing you can do is run the game with medium textures.

No other game I’ve ever played has allowed the allocated VRAM to surpass what the GPU has, this isn’t normal at all.

I’m getting 160 frames while this is happening, Blizz’s own recommendations call for 6-8gb for high textures and plenty of people are running on high without issue on 8gb. There has to be a solution.

For me it even completely fills up my 16GB after a while, it just takes more vram as it sees fit, especially when teleporting around for nightmare dungeons.
Very far from normal and the only game i ever played to do that. It just doesn’t seem to unload any data and keeps dumping files into the vram until it’s full and then some. Given enough teleporting and time passing, the game eventually crashes for me, because of this.

When i put it textures on ultra, as i would love to play it, this happens way fast and after 3-4 teleports the crash will already happen. So i have to play on lower settings than my pc could easily handle, very annoying.

Getting the same issue. VRAM fills up (and doesn’t clear out) and it causes the game to begin freezing up after a period of time. Problems resets itself on game restart or graphics preset change.

I have a RX 6900XT and it is running or of Vram
So no way is this normal

Yep same problem with my 6900XT

Same problem here, i hope that blizzard fix it ASAP

Same issue, 6700 XT + 5600X.

Considered getting Nvidia card cause D4 is Nvidia’s game - but I can see from forums that Nvidia users are also experiencing same exact issues, so I guess we all screwed.

same problem with 6600xt, 5600x and 16gb of ram 3600mhz

Yeah nvidia gpus dont do any better withD4.
Im on rtx 4080 16gb and the Vram is constantly maxed out from the get go. That is when ive capped my frames at 60 mind you…

Edit - SOLVED IT!!!

Used DDU to unninstall and reinstall GPU drivers, disabled XMP and did a debloat on Windows 10, reinstalled Diablo completely without the Ultra textures pack. Since then the game runs smooth without vram overflow.
