High Res Textures vs Regular

What experiences did people have with the betas using the “High Resolution Assets” download vs the smaller one?

I’m seeing some people mention that the former allows the Ultra texture setting while the latter limits textures to Medium or so and that the difference is noticeable even on weapons. While the lower texture download would probably give you better framerates (for those who experienced noticeable drops), is it worth it?

If you have the hard drive space it doesn’t hurt to download the hi-res textures. You can always reduce to Medium in-game.

My 3090 Ti handled hi-res just fine, staying around 58-60 degrees.

I ran max settings so I could experience the visuals, but noticed that unless I set my gfx to “Prefer Maximum Performance” on my 3060, there would be occasional choppiness.

I’ll try turning down the setting to see. Thanks!

Big difference, especially on Hdr monitor. If you can I suggest to run it this way

HDR eh? I’ve tried using that a few times but it doesn’t seem to work properly.
Windows will sometimes let me turn it on, but it only works in game if you’re running full screen (not windowed), which means I can’t alt+tab without potentially crashing the game.

I had ultra textures enabled and was getting ok-good fps on a 2080 8G, and yes I did download the pack. In the Server Slam though I was getting some horrible lag spikes, which I think may be VRAM related. Never saw them in any of the prior betas and I spent a long time playing in 3840x2160 in maximum settings.

Couldn’t say if it looks better than lower settings, didn’t try the lower settings… i mean, why would you?

But it does look nice and you can zoom in and see everything quite clearly, especially on my 49" screen.

I’m running at 195fps average with the high res textures, and it’s a night and day difference. The game looks bad without them.

It turned out to be. I did not have the high rez textures active.

I agree that we’d all like to run at max settings to get the most out of our experience, but for those of us with lesser gfx/cpu’s we are going to have to do some fine tuning (when I upgraded to 3060 it was just toward the end of the shortage, now I hear there’s supposed to be a glut, but I’m not seeing it in the prices).

Does anyone know if we’ll get to download a day or so before the early access starts?

Yes, we should be able to download atleast 48h prior to early access… I think maybe earlier than that since it is release. :beers:

Don’t quote me on this but, D4 is so optimized you should be able to run Max settings and high rez textures with a 3060 on 1080p. Maybe even 2k and still stay at 60fps.

it just gives you option to toggle ultra and very high in some settings, I doubt assets by themselves would change that much if you don’t switch to higher quality modes.

For some reason I was thinking that maybe the higher res assets would require some overhead to “downsample” if not able to be fully implemented in hardware, but I guess they probably have redundancies (same textures/tile in different resolutions), hence the big difference in download sizes.

Yes textures have a massive difference, in image quality and performance. Depends on what your build is.

Check out the developer and streamer couch coop they did on YouTube versus someone running high textures. It makes the couch coop look like Diablo 3 or worse

for 1920x1080 res my gtx 1080 can do 100+ fps with everything max and yes the game looks better with higher textures

Just a potential heads up- High res textures gobbling up all of the VRAM seemed to be the culprit for those who experienced severe overtemps during the betas. Adjust accordingly.
