Hey yo where the shields at?

Why can’t I use a shield on my Sorcerer or Barb?

???

I had one shield drop. It said necromancer only lol

Such a weird thing that a barb cannot wield it. Hopefully blizzard will change this.

Barb is not the same barb of old, he is designed around his new weapon sets.

Dumb.

Let every class wear a shield if they want to.

I don’t get this.

Same. I have a few shields but they were Necro only. If Paladin gets added maybe they would also have one?

Hm, good point.

No more belts or shoulder pieces either.

I found belts and shoulders.

edit: Or at least belts. I could be delusional though.

again they are using the same approach as diablo 3 on this aspect, that means a simpler version of diablo game.

that fact that you as a rogue for example can’t use a wand, shield or whatever they like is really annoying, let us use what we want to, let us create weird builds with items combinations that people at first sight doesn’t seem to notice.

Imagine letting players build how they want and play with things.

Instead we’re told what to do and how to do it.

Class fantasy and immersion is important.

This is not a doityourself class like Skyrim.

Whos class fantasy?

Whos immersion?

Yours?

Mine is that I’m a scrappy hero on their way to glory in the depths of hell, I have more than 55 IQ and am strong enough to hold a board. I should be able to equip a shield to defend myself.

i found 2 shields, for sure 1 said necro only. the other one did not seem to have specified a class. i cant log in to double check but i know for sure 1 of the shields were for necro.

Restrictions can be a good thing when they allow designers to build something better in that restricted space. I think this is clearly the case with barbarians and shields; denying shields to barbarians enables the arsenal system, which makes all of the barbarian’s kit (like Double Strike) available to all barbarians and allows for additions like the weapon-swap triggers. If a designer can’t assume that all barbarians are dual-wielding weapons, then building up the arsenal system doesn’t make as much sense unless they also add shield-specific interactions, which adds development time and headaches that I don’t foresee being worth it at all. Smart design – not just in games, but in anything – is largely about deciding which assumptions are worth making, and then then using that as the bedrock on which you build your thing. Look, sometimes a Swiss army knife is good to have, but if I’m trying to open a bottle of wine, I’ll have a much better time with a proper corkscrew.

Or they could have used shields and had shield abilities as well, giving you the choice of which equipment to use.

Instead everyone is the same.

Shield skills like Shield Charge, which… occupies the same space as Lunging Strike. Or a Shield Bash! Already covered by regular Bash. OK then, how about some sort of defensive mode like Iron Skin or the taunt shout. The shield skill archetypes are covered, they just aren’t exclusive to gear.

The thing you get when adding shields is the ability to explicitly gear out for toughness, but you can already do that as well! You can roll your offensive affixes and traits over to defensive ones.

So look, if you want shields for cosmetic or roleplaying reasons, I’ve got no qualms here, the heart wants what it wants. I just think that their absence makes no difference mechanically, and if anything is a net positive if it allows for designers to then focus on providing more interesting choices and mechanics within that shieldless space.

Not a fan of how they’ve locked shields into being for the necromancer only. A barb not being able to wear a shield is so odd…

i think what they tried doing was knocking out 2 of the archetypes when they announced necro. But the fact is the sword and board lovers will never accept necro as the sword and board class

Yeah, it’s weird since he doesn’t even really have melee skills from what I’ve seen. I believe he just has a swipe skill with the scythe.

I personally think this is a silly complaint.
