I feel like I’m missing something. I’ve played off and on since release, and in season 8 I’m finding a really hard time getting any regular ancestral legendries. It feels like I’m grinding waaaay too much for what I’m getting. I’m on torment 3, which is about where my character ability is, but I feel like I’m hitting an absolute brick wall with drops. I’m not trying to criticize or complain; I just want to know what I’m missing.
I’m not looking for crazy ** or *** GA drops, or even mythics, just the regular *, a couple pieces to fill myself out. I run nightmare dungeons, helltides, infernal hordes and trade obels to try and get drops, but it’s pretty useless it seems. Just want to get to tier 4 and be comfortable, not do crazy high pits.
It seems to take a very, very long time to grind this season, or am I just crazy/unlucky? The time I’ve put in doesn’t seem to balance the progress I would expect for something seasonal.
Just curious what does your gear look like now? 1 GA 800’s with some 750’s? Mostly 750’s? Also have you masterworked your gear at all?
I have mostly 1 GA on me this season. My amulet is 750 I never found better. I did masterwork my gear though which helped push me into T4.

You’re not crazy. The powers that be thought this season needed to be slower and “harder.” They made adjustments so people who play 24/7 wouldn’t finish in 2 days. Now maybe it takes them 3. 
I thought the same thing you wrote up there- didn’t seem like the time invested was yielding useful equipment / upgrades from what I had.
While there are certainly no guarantees, my GA equipment seemed to drop best from Belial (as I would expect) and, for whatever reason, at the end of pit runs. I got my runes up in the nineties before I got bored with it this season, but I was really surprised by so many random GA drops. Some of it was even stuff I could use! Cashing in the obols adds a bit more of a chance too. I even found some GAs at the mercenary den vendor, which I was not expecting at all.

Do IH you are guaranteed GA items in the chest. ToW was a good sorce for me getting ga items.

It takes a bit to find Ancestral legendaries.
My own experience the best places to get them this season has been pit, the Crow (TOW), and obol gambling.
Did like 30 trips to Duriel to get a Tibault’s Will with one GA. Tons of TW but none with a GA. There were a few GA items but the count was definitely low (a few trips returned with full inventory and not a single GA). Thank goodness for the reputation caches as you do get a ton of GAs but sadly it seems those caches are largely class related drops. Why I resorted to farming Duriel (I could do Andariel too but I hate that boss’ mechanics).
If you are looking for ancestral uniques, run the respective boss. If your looking for ancestral legendaries, IH is best, ToW is next, otherwiwe just … play. Whatever. Anything.

Raw drops aren’t good in S8. Obol gambling did me right this Season, and I think many players overlook it as peasant farming.
Infernal Hordes is also good. I only did the 10/8 waves. 6s are terrible, feel bad to play, and should just be eliminated from the game.

Peasant farming? I never heard of that… now I feel like I cheated myself! LOL 
Ahh well, once I max out on Obols in less then 25 minutes I’ll make sure I’ll gamble them all awayyyy…

But really, I went from T1 to T3, and hit a speed bump. Really needed two or three decent GA pieces to break into T4 with any kind of efficiency.
So yeah, not ashamed at hitting up Obol spots while doing Whispers and such.
