Hi everyone. Long time player here and been playing since release.
Im currently running a minion build using the newly buffed Mendelin ring. Kalans edict keystone. Have all the usual minion aspects.
Im comfortably playing on torment III and clear pit 55 regulalry.
Despite my build being ok, i still have questions i dont understand:
why does evertone seem to ignore the + Damage % on gear and tempers? I know its additive so not ideal, but whats a better replacment for minion build? I have a few + summoner damage tempers ans a couple +Damage on gear.
is tempering crit damage / crit chance on all gear that can have those a viable and straightforward end game build ? Crit damage is also additive but lots of end game builds seem to include it but not other + damage % stats / tempers.
isnt the “chance to hit twice” tempers be head and shoulders above any other damage modifier you can temper ? If you put it on 1 gear and masterwoek it to 12 you can get 70% chance i believe. I can get one for skeletons and one for mages and even at only 50% chance each that seems like a HUGE buff to overall DPS. What am i missing here as i rarely see those tempers used in end game builds.
why does everyone use 2 handed scythe on minion builds ? I get that minjons inherit your weapon damage and any aspect/ stat/ temper is doubled , but you lose out on all the apsects and bonuses and espeically tempers on off hand weapon. Is it really so much better to use a 1 handed and lose out on all those bonuses feom off hand ?
im using shadow mages, and apsect that makes skeleton preiest empower your skeleton warriors to do shadow damge. I then use the aspect that says you and your minons do 50%x shadow damage to cursed enemeis. This seems like a huge multiplicitve damage increase since all my minions wxcept golem do shadow damage. Yet i rarely see this set up and apexcts used for end game builds
Tdlr : juat looking for best aspects and tempers to max minion damage that scales with Mendelin as well.
The crit damage is way better multiplier than raw damage. And yes since these are additive, +%damage falls off in effeicientcy to crit, as it is a multi in it’s self. Early game you can go crazy with +%damage it helps a lot, untill you don’t have high enough crit chance.
Answer above, crit is allready a multiplier, doesn’t matter if it stacks additively.
Chance to hit twice with skeletons would be more valuable, if Mendeln would count those atracks into it’s proc. But the ring only counts attack animations, not damage instances. Sadly.
I guess you wanted to write 2 hand scythe. The answer fairly easy, a higher base damage, that is than getting multiplield, by all multipliers is better than a lower base damage. Off hand doesn’t give that much extra, to compensate the damage loss. Which is actually a problem as it highlights how weak minion damage scaleing and it’s multipliers are still.
Because Mendeln procs are physical damage, it works better with increasing physical damage than shadow. That is why Grasping Veins is better to keep, as the first part of the buff works on minions. Damned is only BiS in starter builds, but falls off in late game. It realy comes down to what aspect is worth to throw away, when you get less slots to occupie as you start to use more uniques and mythics, specialy when you can get your hands on a Grand Father sword and Heir of Perdition helm.
For more expalination go visit Macrobioboi’s YT chanel, its realy worth to look at his testings and explaination why thigs work better than others. He is one of the best Necro theorycrafters.
Dude you are a godsend !! Especially the part about crit damage being a multiplier. Once i get back home tomorrow ill try to replace my sunmon damage tempers with crit damage / chance tempers.
But if i do that, how do i see all those youtube vidoes that show mendelin damage when it procs be like 20k+ while on mine its only 5300. How do they get it that high?
I also got the impression of you saying that only thing that matters with minions is mendelin proc, and dont worry ablut the damage of their indivual hits other than attack speed to proc mendelin faster ? Am i reading that right ?
What ablut all those additive damage paragon nodes ? Should i remove all pf them and use them to get to final 5th glypth board and then allocate them elsewhere ? Like how truly useless are those additive damage bonuses in torment III and pit 50+ ?
I think that is a culmination of high crit chance, GA and masterworked, also maybe they are useing a GF.
Well basicly yes. Mendeln now works in a pretty weird way. It’s base damage is still YOUR base damage, and than multiplied by anything that mutiplies minion damage. That is why if you look at Kripparian’s video explaination(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CovYs-TkAHk&t=305s&ab_channel=Kripparrian), he shows that minion damage is a couple hundred, but Mendeln procs are 50k.
Oh no keep them, those are fine, you still need some, they are helpful and can stack them up to then get multipled, it’s just doesn’t realy worth it to have them on your items, as you can have more valueable affixes there.
I might be out of date with my info here, but additive crit damage and additive damage are exactly the same. However, the difference is in the quantity of the stat. So crit damage on tempered gear is i think 125% base perfect roll, while summoning damage is I think 90%… if those numbers are wrong it doesn’t matter, as crit is always more then summon damage. Now you could go golem damage, but then your mages get nothing… and vise versa.
Given every build is a 100% crit chance build crit damage is almost always the best option as it applies to all your minions and is more then other rolls can be.
Do you absolutely have to use crit damage? yes if you want your char to use the most efficent tempers, no if you don’t really care… I haven’t tempered crit damage and I can do T4 easily, but then again I can only just do Pit 91, working on 92.
So if u want a pit 100 char you need to stick to the absolute meta and be as efficient as possible.
But by baseline crit is x50%, op is x50%, and vuln is x20% multiplicative effects. Than you can add to these values additively. “All damage” is JUST additive by baseline.
i don’t know how its calculated, my understanding was all additive values are added separately to multiplicative values, so before or after doesn’t really matter. I am not a maths guy at all I must add!
This is where I would like someone who knows how the maths work either post here or someone could give me a link.

Is crit damage additive in Diablo 4?
Crit damage is additive except the 1.5x multiplier at the end that your crit damage stat does not influence.Nov 11, 2023
So it sounds like additive crit damage isnt factored into the initial 1.5x crit multiplier ?
The big buff to crit is that mendeln benefits from crit scaling tremendously.
Your base additive sources might get you to 3 or 400% on a good day. Crit will get you into the 3000% range when you get GF when added with grasping veins ( macro mentioned early in that mendeln is now taking things from both the player and the minions, which is why it is scaling so well).
The big difference is that crit gets layers of multipliers to stack on the additive bonuses, base damage does not
Hello, I have a question regarding the ring of mendeln. I’m currently making Shadow minion build with this ring. The question is, though, when the explosion happens on a sixth attack, does that minion blow up or is it just an explosion? Just want to make sure because one of the aspects I use says after 10 seconds minion damage is increased. I wonder if I shouldn’t be using this aspect now?
The minion doesn’t explode, it’s 6th attack gets a little aoe explosion, and yes you deffinetly want to use any aspect or power thet increases minion damage, as it will also increase the mendeln explosion damage.
Nope not realy, as the play style will be pulling enemies, Corpse Tendrill them into one pixel, Curse, Soulrift, Blight, Golem and let minions take care of the rest. So you are not realy spaming Blight when pushing. Well maybe for speed runs it’s useful. More useful mythics for pushing would be Grand Father, Heir of Perdition, Harequin Crest, Tyrael’s Might, depending on where your build is lacking, because whith allready useing Mendeln you still need a certain number of legendaly aspects. So you can’t occupy too many slots with uniques and mythics.
That’s good to know. Yeah I’m already using shako. I do need to get the grand daddy tho. Sad part is I already have enough Sparks for it. I just need the damn runes for it. Farming runes is a pain for sure.
