At the risk of sounding ignorant I have a couple of questions regarding Helltide etiquette. I play a fireball sorcerer who uses Hydra to protect my flanks while I take on the gathering I just engaged. When I get back on my horse to collect the cinders I go out to see what the Hydras took care of for me. Many times there are several. At times I come across more than I expected but I vacuum them up as I go along. Sometimes, though, as I am doing the vacuuming I come across another player who most likely was the one who created those cinders. Did I just steal his hard work? I would not do so intentionally. Am I just supposed to leave any cinders lying around alone?
Second, recently I have noticed players hanging around as I charge around gathering up cinders and as soon as I offer them to a chest they seem to come right up to the chest beside me. What are they doing? Are they taking advantage of an open chest? Is this OK? It doesn’t seem right if that is what they are doing but maybe I’m wrong and it is acceptable.

All is fair in love and war. Just kill stuff and Hoover up the rewards.

You are perfectly fine in both cases. You’re bound to run into other adventurers out in the helltides. They will take advantage of your hard work just as you will them. Just consider yourself lucky if you happen to get a few extra shards.
The chest only gives out loot to the one who opens it. Far as I know there is literally no way to gain an advantage by waiting around a chest. I’d say it’s more or less coincidental that they happened to be there when you showed up.

The cinders you see are yours. If a player is around another player killing, they get cinders from their kills as well. Other players are getting cinders that you don’t see from your kills. Just like when in group, you see your loot and your team mate sees their loot.
No body is taking advantage of somebody else opening a chest. They are trying to open it as well. First come, first served.

If you can see it then it’s yours dude.
Although I’ll acknowledge your sportsmanship, very elegant of you OP.
Good luck with the hoovering!
All drops are your own. The other player will have his own drops.
Not true. The chest will drop loot for everyone in the area, so it doesn’t matter who opens the chests.
It’s personal loot, all drops are instanced per player. It’s impossible for you to take someone else’s drops, and vice versa.
When you see drops from monsters that you didn’t personally kill, are you taking advantage of someone else’s effort? Sure, but it works both ways. They will get drops from stuff you killed, as well. The game just automatically assumes that nearby players may be playing together and cooperating (even if that’s not actually the case) so it just generates drops for everybody. It doesn’t matter if they’re in your party or not.
Chests and/or chest loot will also be instanced per player. When someone else comes up to you while you’re opening a chest, they’re probably just opening their version of the chest. Or at least their version of the instanced loot that get spawned when it opens.
This is all normal and you’re not doing anything wrong or unexpected.
We must be playing different games. Anytime someone has opened up a chest requiring the cinder shards near me I don’t get squat. Would be amazing if they did, I would never have to farm cinder shards for living steel again, I’d just wait for some random guy to open it for me.

If loot was winner take all in Helltides it would be the most fun zone evar

If someone nearby kills another mob and items show up on your screen, those are yours, even though you didn’t strike the mob. The player who killed them gets their own item drops from the same mob. They can’t see your drops and vice versa.
This isn’t just for helltide. Any time a player is nearby, you get item drops for enemies they kill. As to why it’s like this, I have no idea. Just like I don’t understand why a player can join another player’s dungeon and literally do nothing but stand at the entrance and get exp for everything the other player kills. You can level without doing a thing.

seriously though, if I don’t initiate an event and I come in at the end, I let them pop their own chest. it seems kind of lame to just ride in, open the chest, and leave, lol

Can you imagine if they were in the PvP zone and you had to flag yourself in order to open helltide chests?

I clearly claimed the Camp spot and tagged the World Boss first but other players are getting loot. Not fair! Big mad!

in all honesty, when i see people doing an event in helltide, i just go the other direction as to not mess up the event for them…
Not me. I will go right in there and grab that chest.
Not like i am stealing from them anyway as they get their own stuff……
I will take some free cinders without effort. Why not?

turn it into a camping sniper bastid situation. use the chests as bait. we need better assassin classes, lol
The only etiquette fail here is that those bystanders didn’t hit the applaud button on their emote wheel to cheer on a sorc that isn’t BL.

I actually wish I could solo queue for Legion Events, World Bosses, and Hell Tides. It isn’t any fun that everything dies immediately and leaves me Fury starved the entire time also. Solo world should be default. Towns have people. They need to add a LFG and Matchmaking Tool. Unless you are going out of your way on Discord, have friends already that play D4, or realllllly trying to find people to group with, it is impossible.
Diablo 4 is a very weird conundrum in that you have players where you do not want them, and don’t have players where you do. Somehow, the Developers managed to accomplish the exact opposite of what should be done.
