Same, just died 5 minutes ago due to a patch update. It closed my game and started a patch while i was bossing.
Hardcore as well. This is just ridiculous man.

I’ve never seen the game force a closure to patch without warnings first.

As long as we as a community allow them to get away with whatever they want, they will continue to do so.
The only way this will change is if the community stands as a whole and says “unacceptable”.
They lie in every campfire chat. They promise the same things in every campfire chat then immediately do a 180 every single time.
They do things like this, forcing client resets in the middle of gameplay, causing hardcore players to lose EVERYTHING from their invested time, with ZERO consequence to them.
All because every time they lie, every time they go back on their word, every time they screw the players, soooooo many people defend it. For what reason I do not understand.

thats why i like console, well PS5, it will auto download, but never install until u allow it - well if you are playing anyway

Lost my char in the pit also today although not from the patch….my daughter decided it would be smart to use every appliance in house at the same time…,
