Had this version of D4 came out…

It took them 6 seasons and an expansion to make one game.

Well, by doing what they did (by apparently splitting the game the way they did), they made a lot of money doing this (well more money at least)- either that or VoH wasn’t ready to be released yet.

I’m not entirely sure I agree with this statement. If the game had launched in the state it’s in now (relatively speaking) I believe it wouldn’t have gotten as much hate (it’d still get plenty don’t get me wrong), but also wouldn’t push it to be a game of the year contender either. The gameplay leans more heavily on the D3 side than anything else right now.

The hype and expectations of the game were varied and mixed by all players interested. Some were expecting another D2, others a D3, and others something even further beyond. You also can’t discredit the abhorrent amount of bugs and problems the game has had, even more so when VoH released. To date we have not received one major patch that hasn’t had a glaring issue, or rather multiple glaring issues.

Unfortunately though the people who make the call for what wins game of the year don’t play games like these beyond maybe 40 hours at best. So under that premise, it very well could have won.

Fair points however if we look at what drives a game like Diablo its unfair to not mention the loot find game. D2 perfected the loot find game for many but for others D3 had the better formula. This really feels like both kinda?

Did I want that? Not sure… but I didn’t want to have nothing to hunt. Before we had nothing now we really have lots.

Yeah, your comment makes far more sense with “money” rather than “awards”.

And that’s generally true. Even in the case of gameshows like Jeopardy, it’s not about being smart, but quickness on the buzzer and depth of trivia knowledge.

The game today is not really any closer to complete than the game on release, just easier as there is no challenge anywhere to be found. Oh and items affixes were simplified. Tempering and MWing was added, and Uber boss chores were added. If that was all you felt was missing at launch…then I guess you should be happy. At least you have it now.

If D4 came out like it is today, I know for a fact I wouldn’t have bought it. Case in point, I didn’t buy the expansion and judging from the constant discounts and almost non-existent attention and discussion in social, I bet it sold poorly.

If anything, I’d go as far to say the expansion was the nail in the coffin for the game and its overall direction post release. People that liked it stuck around, and the ones that didn’t moved on.

What were you looking for in your Diablo?

I was relatively content after playing the free Beta. I thought the game felt and played closer to what I like. Items seemed to drop with cool affixes, combat felt good and the game overall felt decent. Clearly, there were no endgame systems but I’d argue this mostly is the case even today.

The direction towards a faster, easier, shallower D4 was something nobody really asked for and ultimately it failed to capture audiences. They said D4 was going back to the franchises roots, so it’s no surprise everyone that bought the game was expecting such direction, not D3.2.

While I will agree the game is better now then release I thought the game was fine on release as well
