Game won’t start now. Didn’t play D4 for a few days due to travel. This morning the game client updated and now keeps telling me my GPU is not supported, updating driver may resolve this. If I hit ok, I run into the PRISM error which closes the game before it can start. Essentially, I have been playing this game since launch on my older Alienware 17 R4 (GTX 1070 GPU). I think it forced me to update my driver once or twice since then. I downloaded the latest 536.40 driver (released by Nvidia on Jun 29th). Ran DDU to clean up the graphics installs. Installed the new 536.40 (without Gforce experience). Pretty frustrated to see the same GPU not supported and PRISM errors.
Open the LocalPrefs file for D4. (Documents\Diablo IV)
Change the line [Adapter “0”] to [Adapter “1”]
Second fix is to disable the the onboard intel, but I don’t recommend this on laptops, as its needed for power management.
Will try that out and let you know…thank you for the suggestion
Other options include:
-
Resetting defaults in the Nvidia control panel, especially if you are running Geforce Experience, you may need to check the game profiles and makes sure Diablo IV if listed is using global settings, not custom settings. You can also try doing a clean install from the driver installer.
-
If running Windows 11, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Under here is a list of Apps. See if Diablo IV is listed. If not, add it. Hit add, browse to where the game is installed, find the Diablo IV.exe file. Add it. Then hit options and set it to use the Nvidia.
I did have Geforce experience with prior driver install. As stated above, I did run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) utility as I always do to clean out and reset all the graphics drivers/settings, etc. Great utility that you disconnect network and boot into safe mode to run. Installed new driver w/o the Geforce Exp.
Anyhow, your first fix suggestion alone (Change the display adapter from 0 to 1) fixed the issue. Game starts great now! Really appreciate your response, spot on!
Take Care
hey im not great with computer’s could you explain how to run the DDU to me i don’t want to break something trying to fix the game.
Thank you I changed my localPrefs file for D4 and it work !
No problem. Its a work around anyway. I wasn’t the first one to come up with it, but it helps people out so that’s all that matters.
Good luck!
This is a utility you can download that will allow you to remove all the GPU related driver setups and files:
https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
The tool isn’t hard to use, but you need to make sure the computer has no internet while using the tool. Be sure to read the instructions on that page before running the tool.
This is a USE AT OWN RISK tool. Meaning there is no official support from AMD or Nvidia regarding use of the tool or if the tool causes issues with your Windows installation or driver installation.
I would use this or something like this only as a last resort. Often the GPU driver you download has the option to do a clean install when running their setup, which may perform a similar task and fix a problem due to retained settings and files.
