Game stuttering

I am Getting Stuttering In Town running on my horse and with certain Mobs and the Tree vines seem real choppy.

GPU-4080 Gpu
32GB RAM
13900HX CPU

I have messed with the settings switched some things on
lowered settings
changed resolution to lower

reinstalled game

Nothing fixes the stutters.

The more you TP the worse it gets. Hordes becomes unplayable if you go into a a few different zones prior. Subsequent hordes are even worse. Nothing I’ve tried makes a difference, this is 100% something related to season 9.

for me it was on a level with Tree vines that you gotta cut down. the animation was a bit choppy. lowering the settings seems to not work.

also happend on some weird tree Mob monster. when the animation of him coming up from the ground it was real choppy/stuttery

I noticed a huge difference today. Honestly not sure if it’s something blizz has done or if it was one of the last few things I tried. I disabled cross play, I repaired the game from blizz client, I updated armory crate which updated my rgb firmware for my mobo and gpu. Not sure if any had a direct contribution or not. But I’ve been struggling to do anything in this game without performance degrading to unplayable within minutes. But today, it seems I can play without the game becoming completely unstable/unplayable. My money is on the game repair fixing something.

I still get the zone lag, but it is really minimal in comparison with how it’s been running. I can run multiple hordes now without them being unplayable, although they still have a fps drop at the start but its only for a few seconds. Again not sure what happened, if it was something I did or blizz did but it’s actually playable. Still not as smooth as s8 but way way way better than the start of s9.

Who knows, maybe it’s a fluke and I got lucky and it will start acting up again later today. But try doing a scan and repair and disabling cross play. I feel like I’ve tried everything under the sun and nothing worked, but this seems to have actually made a difference.

Edit - Game still runs like a pig, and way worse since goblins. Still so much frame drops and the game requires frequent restarts once it really starts chugging. It’s really killing the season and the entire experience. It really is brutal and sad that it’s not being addressed.

ya it get the same thing tp lagging from place to place

I am also getting SEVERE stuttering, but only on Diablo 4.

Not in any other game.

nVidia 5080, Intel i9 11700, 32 gigs RAM, on M2 SSD installation.

No excuse in this.

hey have u figured out anything? work arounds?

I get the same. I’ve also tried all the suggestions to no avail. Started right before this most recent season (I just bought the game end of season 8). I haven’t been able to play since I got it, only logging in to check on the rubberbanding.

Same for me on PC - started when they upgraded to 231 then it remained when they backed up to 230 then got worse when they put 231 in place again. My brother, 2,000 miles away, was reporting the same thing when we were playing together about 30 minutes ago.

I have found that if I log out then back in it usually fixes the problem. But transporting, at least to a city, usually breaks it again - makes it unplayable.

They introduced a very lovely memory leak in to the game on PC.

Tested this on the weekend.

Bring up task manager and open the performance tab, then memory.

Game will start off at around 11GB used, balloon to 28GB and then crash with an out of memory error. It takes time but you can steadily watch the memory useage increase overtime.

If you have 64GB of memory and 4090/5090 it unlikely you will run in to the issue as the memory useage will take a lot of time to reach enough for it to PageFile Swap.

I also tried swapping the PageFile to its own NVME SSD, used a 990 Pro 2TB since 7700MB read but again it still came up with the issue.

I’m having the same problem. Bought a new P.C. with nVidia 5080 and stuttering on and off all the time.

Same for me and never had issues before this season. It’s a lot better recently but still a pain to randomly deal with. It also seems tied to the wardrobe for me. That’ll glitch sometimes, especially in cities, and show blank items at first. The bad lag kicks in and doesn’t go away for a while. I usually just exit and restart game.

it’s not about hardware… blizz seem to screw hard on network code - it’s OK playable on 500mbs, but no more on 50mbps link, which was excellent for years.

when zoning, game client want to read ā€œrawā€ data from server - 6 to 10+ MB, which is … too much.

Im suffering from the same thing and what I think someone said is right after the patch they screwed up and rolled back is when it all started happening for me. About 2 weeks ago? i believe possibly 3 by now.
Ive disabled Antivirus and the only thing running is D4. Same issue.
Updated graphics card - same issue
Dumped all my settings to low. Same issue. Teleporting seems to make the issue arise quicker.
D4 seems to tend to crash since the patch on exit without fail.
There is some major memory leak going on. I was watching the game use like 10gb of Ram even trying to exit and after it crashes it sits there lagging my system for the next 30 seconds till it either finally ends itself or I can manage to kill it in task manager.
I really want to keep playing this season but these constant issues are making me rethink it.

this. and moving from zone to zone is even worse. i’ve seen how much data D4 consume through network in this case and it’s easily several megabytes sometimes.

and while it’s not fully downloaded - game is being freezing. on fast network (500mbps, that I have at home) - it is noticable, but not ruining the game (i’m not pushing pits, so little freeze will not kill me). but on 50mbps, that I has in office (just to play D4!) - it became totally unplayable. freeze can be several seconds. I had to move from 50 @ 4G to unlimited 5G in office (up to 400 mbps ususally) and it’s ok.

the worse thing is, that D4 was excellent in this - networking - for years. I have been playing 4g/50 mbps since like … 2019 or so. but now, it’s not enough. not even close to be enough…

When starting Battlenet, I opened the Task Manager to find at least (6) instances, subbed under the main battlenet, of battlenet being used, and the main battle net having up to 200+mb. Compounded if I open firefox I get (10) instances of that open with the top one running 400mb+ and Norton Secure Browser running (11-12) instances at 600mb+…

Launching the game it stutters to the extreme, even on the loading screen and as well as at the character menu.

What is even going on here?
This started in the last couple days.

AW M17 R3
NVIVIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super
32GB RAM
7.5GB Page File
WIN 11 Home 64bit
i9 2.4Ghz

Edit:
Tested this with other games on my Steam account.
FFXIV has no issues at all. Hero’s of the Storm, no issue at all.

I am guessing from what others said it is a memory leak, or some other issue introduced in the current patch. Because none of my other games on Steam are acting like this one on Battlenet.

Free Tester Update (Since I did EXTENSIVE bug testing and reporting on BG3)
Hero’s of the Storm does not stutter.
That should be a -clear indication- that D4 is borked, Devs.
Fix this, so we can still play our season, and take advantage of the gobbie event.
WHICH you will now need to -extend to the end of the SEASON-, thanks to this BS stuttering and can’t play the game at all.

Did more testing on Blizz games.
Starcraft II isn’t stuttering either, SO IT IS SOLELY ON D4 AND YOUR UPDATE.
So please fix this. We all want to go back to normal. We the people whom play and your Execs/Corpos whom what the money flowing again.

Additionally, just upgraded to the new NVIDIA Patch 580, that was released 31 JUL, and it is STILL stuttering from login screen to game play. Also tried Scan/fixing the game, and nothing. This stuttering issue didn’t start, at least for me, until Blizzard dropped HOTFIX 1 - July 29, 2025 - 2.3.2.

Like everyone else - the lag is so bad I can’t play, I can’t even shut the game down using the game menus - I’ve had to quit at the enc of seasons before, I think 6 was the worst - until now. I’ve been through hours of trying to fix issues since the game was released…getting to the point of moving on. Nothing else lags like this, I’ve been playing a lot of different games since this started Monday (my 1st time back and it’s gone from bad to worst).

Real Bad Lag to ā€œProgram is not respondingā€ - trying to walk in town

Diablo IV is shut down and still using 9 GB of memory…this is unreal.

So, I may, or may not, after spending my two days off trying to figure out the ā€˜why’ of it - figured it out. Blizz was no help on their ā€˜Support Site’. But am I surprised?

I went into my NVIDIA settings, and chose GLOBAL VSYNC OFF. Additionally, when I got into the stuttering mess of a game D4 was, I chose ā€˜Options’ and noticed that I not longer had a Resolution, and my GFX Card (2080 Super) was no longer visible. Instead it had a Intel(R) UHD Graphics, which I totes don’t want. So changed it up. Clicked NVIDIA GeForce 2080 Super and fixed my resolution to 3840x2160. Saved the settings. The game took it but froze up a bit. After a few seconds I force closed it. Checked the settings, and I as running clean again. Something with that stupid hotfix they did reset our GFX Card and GFX Resolution. So, hope this helps you all. Finally able to play again, smoothe as I was before that 31 JUL ā€˜hotfix’.

I’m glad you figured your issue out - wish I could say the same. Loading everything freezes, Immortal keeps locking up…no other games from anyone else have issues. I get gray screens loading until the gate, my character screen starts out blank, then the character freezes and can’t be rotated…Speed test are over 200 MB down and 135 MB up (actually fast for where I live). Game starts frozen…Menu gets the circle of death, waiting to scroll through video settings (My RTX 270 still shows) even the option screens freeze.

Well Carp - Blizzard seems to have fixed whatever the last patches broke. Immortal and Diablo IV are back working…sucks to lose a weeks worth of game play, but glad things are working again.

Definitely getting ALOT of stuttering and DC’ed during encounters. Doesn’t matter which one. Dungeons, Boss Lairs, The Pit. Not sure if Blizz can keep up with the action or what. Hopefully they are looking into the network on THEIR side.
