I have a month-old desktop that has been crashing to the desktop since the release of 1.50. I have a custom NZXT-PC, i9-14900KF, MSI MPG Z790 Carbon WiFi II (MS-7D89), 98 GB DDR5-6800 GSkill RAM, NVIDIA RTX 4090 w/24 GB RAM, and multiple NVME Gen 4 & 5 SSD drives. My system is not overclocked and is set to all Intel specs. I have the latest system-wide drivers including video drivers courtesy of DriverEasy and NVIDIA. Furthermore, Windows is up to date with the latest patches. None of this made a difference in the stability of the game. I have many other games such as Path of Exile, Last Epoch, and numerous other AAA-titles that run without crashing.
The Diablo IV game is installed on a Gen 5 SSD and it is drive-E in my system separate from the Win-OS drive-C.
I have tried looking at the Fenris crash logs to try and find a hint to the problem causing the crash. Furthermore, I have scoured the many posts on this forum and more without a definitive solution.
I did discover the following, deleting the LocalPrefs.txt file in my local documents-Diablo IV directory which results in a fresh copy being created during the startup of Diablo 4. This results in many advanced settings, supported by my system’s hardware, being disabled. There is a positive result of longer periods of uptime between crashes to the desktop. However, it eventually crashes.
I did read a previous forum post where one person had success with the Fenris Error - Crashes by simply modifying the "LocalPrefs.txt file by changing the text line with [ Adapter “0” ] to [ Adapter “1” ] which I am assuming is the GPU adapter being used in the system and changing it to “1” would be for a second GPU.
My system does have two GPUs. one is embedded video (Intel 770) as part of the motherboard, so to prevent any detection of another video GPU, I modified the BIOS setting for my MB from “Auto” to “Ignore” saving the new setting, and rebooted.
I am pleased to report that as of now, my system has yet to crash to the desktop with the Fenris application window Crash Code. It appears more stable. Furthermore, I have not modified any advanced settings disabled by the generic LocalPrets.txt settings file.
These are the advanced disabled settings or settings in use on my PC.
HDR - OFF
Vertical Sync - OFF
Peripheral Lighting - OFF
Resolution Scaling - OFF
Ray Tracing - OFF
I do have 34" G-Sync Monitors at 3440x1440 and 144 Hz.
Whenever I try to enable the above settings the system stability is dramatically reduced.
I hope this helps someone else suffering from the lack of stability from the last two patches.
