Game crashes on startup

I was hopeful for this as I am also on windows 11… but sadly even with both it didn’t fix it for me :frowning:

I don’t want to be optimistic at this point. After changing it to 1, saving, and running again - it crashed. Then did another (3rd now?) tiny update thing, and then it worked… we’ll see if it sticks.

I am having the exact same problem. Constant crashing at various parts of the login and char select process. I have GTX 2060 Super and played the previous beta completely fine.
I have tried all of the steps in this thread including:
-Removed High Res Texture Pack
-Reinstalled the game
-Uninstall and reinstall of my video drivers
-Deleted the Blizzard Entertainment folder in ProgramData
-Changed the LocalPrefs file to disable Chroma.

At this point I’ve spent a fair bit of my Saturday morning trying to do this and I am pretty disappointed that a reward will be unobtainable and a true “server slam” possible because of a game issue beyond me control. If Blizzard could address this and maybe extend the beta that would be helpful.

Same problem, splash screen loads and then freezes. Worked fine as recently as yesterday afternoon. I noted yesterday that I still needed to use the “disable chroma effects” tag to prevent the game from crashing on startup.

Scan and repair appears to have worked.

update - back to the same issue, doesn’t load

I had this exact same issue. Got stuck after character creation, so I brought up Task Manager (alt, ctrl, delete) and exited. Then on start up it would get stuck loading the Diablo IV splash screen.

What I did is locate the local files (file folder) through Battle.net settings (gear icon) next to “PLAY” and activated “Run as Admin”, after I had right clicked on “Diablo IV” in the local files. The next time I tried loading, it went all the way through to the game with less issues than when I first booted the game.

Hope this helps someone… I’m running Windows 11 with a modern laptop that comes with a 3050 TI.

Ok I am having that problem too.
But I got it running a few times by just closing battlenet and rebooting Win11.
When I stop the game and try to restart the same problem appears.
So the Win11 reboot helps (weirdly not always). Can’t figureout which process is causing this

Didn’t help me unfortunately :frowning:

I were playing but i had freezed. I just close the game and when I tried to play again i can’t click anywhere, also don’t see my characters.

Crashes at launch, right after Diablo logo.
Worked fine on closed and open beta. Was forced to update nvidia driver for this server slam.
My PC meets the specs, I have started as admin, used scan and repair, cleared the game catche and reset GPU setting to recommended. I even restarted my pc. Crash, crash, crash. Very disappointing.
I’m not going to waste another three hours reinstalling, The support page is very poor.

Cant risk this expensive game not running after purchase, so I think I will just game a miss for now. There shouldn’t have these issues at this late stage of development.

Game freezes at gray screen or boot screen, usually right before the red “IV” fades in. Very rarely I can click as soon as the boot starts and it will get to the main menu screen but then it will freeze as it attempts to “Logging into Diablo 4”.

Restart PC (many times throughout the other steps below)
Scan and Repair Diablo 4 (no issues found)
Modify install and turn off high res assets
Disable Nvidia geforce overlay
Uninstall Nvidia geforce
Ensure no Razer software installed
Uninstall and Reinstall Diablo 4
Use task manager to kill unneeded services (xbox gaming services, logitech overlay, logitech hub, many others)
changed 3 settings in “LocalPrefs.txt” I changed Safemode “0” to “1”, DisableChromaEffects “0” to “1” and SkipIntroMovie “0” to “1”
Turned off Discord overlay
Added -quicktest to game command line arguments
Turn off windows defender, firewall, and any other malicious file protection toggle

Exactly the same problem, Windows 11 + I9-9900K + 3090.

I have tried absolutely everything:

  • Reinstallation of the drivers
  • Reinstalling the game
  • Repairing the game
  • Check Windows Update
  • Launch launcher and game in Admin mode
  • Disable HDR
  • Disable memory integrity
  • Disable Razer Chroma in LocalPrefs.txt
  • Change the resolution in LocalPrefs.txt
  • Set Texture Quality to 2 in LocalPrefs.txt
  • Close all background software
  • Whitelist the game in the antivirus
  • Empty the cache file

The game crashes in 3 different places:

  1. On startup, gray screen
  2. At startup, during the logo
  3. From time to time when I join the waiting line

Could we please get a D4 dev or a Blizzard Rep to respond to this thread? Even if the response is “No current ETA on a fix”. That way I dont waist the rest of my weekend just “hoping” it will somehow let me onto the Beta. Very disappointing, I was looking forward to the mount and other perks pre go live, as I was not able to play the first two beta’s

I am on a Ryzen 9 5900 with a RTX 3090 with 32 GB of ram. Game launched and I got to level 6 on a druid. I closed the game and did a restart on my computer and now the game loads the word Diablo and becomes an unresponsive application. All drivers are up to date. I see it is still being investigated I hope we get a fix for this.

Also after reinstalling High Res Assets it seem to get crash when GeForce Overlay launched. I am now reinstalling the whole game file to see if this will work as my game was originally working on initial download. After reinstalling the whole game I was able to play one character to 20 and I started a second. I logged off the game and now the bug is back. So basically, I have to uninstall and reinstall to get in the game. Nothing else has worked to get be past the grey screen and or the Diablo logo.

This worked initially for me, played for about 20 minutes (ish) and then it froze and crashed.

Tried all this fixes and no change, very sad.

Same here. I was able to play during the day with 2 crashes. Now at the evening, it crashes again while starting. I couldn’t play yesterday. And now it seems like I can’t play this evening. I didn’t have these messy issues during previous betas…

Directed here from the Discord server. Having the same issue. Starts with gray screen, transitions to black with the word “Diablo”, and then crashes. Didn’t have this issue during the last 2 playtests and it’s pretty disappointing that we will be missing out on a chance to play and earn the horse trophy. And it doesn’t give me a lot of confidence in what we will see at launch. I’m on win 11, rtx 3090, core i7 11700k, 64gb mem, and I’m installing on an nvme hard drive (also widescreen monitor, if that matters). Hope you get this issue figured out. Good luck.

Random grey screen on startup, or when transitioning from hub to world area. Great going Blizz, instead of focusing on battle pass, you should be doing debug on your engine.
