Game constantly freezing when opening menus/map

Anyone else having this issue? Frequently when I hit “C” to open the character menu there is a lengthy freeze. Same thing when I town portal, or open the map. Doesn’t happen all the time, but often enough to be annoying. Anyone else having this? Was not happening at the start of this season, but has been happening for the last 4-5 days.

I’m having similar issues. I have had the freezing when opening the map etc. also when the Seekers are hunting you and pop out of nowhere I’ve had screen freezing. I’m running a Nvidia 1660 Super graphics card. Updated the drivers and reverted back but still having the same issues.

Yes, exactly the same issue. It started today, I open the inventory game crashes, I open map/waypoint game crashes… It crashes even without the typical error window.

I also rolled back to previous Nvidia driver, when it used to work okayish (had sometimes crashes before) but never to this extend. I played around with settings, game just randomly crashes and freezes. I am out of ideas :frowning:

I had updated my laptop to the latest driver to see if it would start having issues with the latest patch.

This laptop doesn’t have the high res packs.
Runs High settings.
1080p
100FPS capped in game.
Reflex enabled+Boost
DLSS at quality
vsync is disabled.
Peripheral Lighting disabled.

11400h (i5 11th gen 6C/12T)
32GB DDR4
3050Ti 4GB
1TB Samsung 980 Pro NVME

Now.

It would start up, load the character menu, I chose my seasonal character, it loaded it up to the game in town, I moved around it was fine. I hit ESC to bring up the game options and it froze the second I pressed the key.

However.

I let it sit there. After 15-20 seconds, it went ahead and gave me the menu. I hit ESC again, was back in town and seemed fine. Hit ESC again, it froze again. For about the same amount of time roughly.

Then was in the menu, flipped through it, then back to the town.

Then I proceeded to run around town, teleported to a different town, jumped on the horse, ran around the country side in one of the vampire event maps, running through monsters, then teleported back to town. Seemed fine. No more freezing after the initial. I hit ESC several more times, and nothing.

Game ran at 100FPS most of the time just fine. Its a bit taxing on this card, but it was playing very smooth regardless.

My desktop, no issues post recent patch. Just got done playing for the past hour. Works fine on it.

See the same freezes on any menus, however my game just closes itself, so no way on waiting this out. I get it to work for a while when I go to medium settings, but it still crashes on random occurence, I even tried killing the latest worldboss, everything seemed fine, but when he died, I saw the loot and freeze, game closed…

I even rolled back to August Nvidia drivers now, doesn’t help :frowning:

How exactly?

The best way is to use the DDU tool to fully remove the newer driver and then install the old one. And you have to be offline during the steps. The website for DDU has instructions:

https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/

Just make sure you download the older Nvidia driver here using the advanced search tool:

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

Make sure you pick DCH and use the Game Ready versions.

The ones from August have been working, but I’m running on the May 30th version. On my desktop.

I only upgraded the laptop to try to duplicate the problem.

Well I did it manually, DDU is only if you can’t uninstall the drivers the normal way if I read it correctly, so I just installed the older drivers, it appears to work. Just D4 has issues. I also discovered I had some open Updates on Windows, so I did them and after that the game seemed to run again. I did the rest of the helltide just fine, but back in town, opening the inventory and boom, back to desktop again.

Something is off with the latest patch of D4… I filed a ticket

Well, one thing that hasn’t changed is the load opening vendors, stash and inventory have on the system, especially the GPU and its VRAM.

If you run Afterburner and enable the RivaTuner Statistics, you can monitor on-screen the performance of the card.

Typically, the usage, power level, and heat will spike when opening those pages, and sometimes in an extreme fashion.

VRAM takes the brunt of it too. Part of the issue with that, is the VRAM is not the trigger for the card to increase fan speed, but the GPU temps.

So for many cards, the fan lags behind in cooling efficiently.

One of the reasons I used Afterburner was to set a custom fan curve that’s just a bit more aggressive in cooling my card. I wasn’t having extreme issues like some, but I wasn’t going to take any chances.

With the changes, mine stays below 70C, even at the VRAM and Hotspot under some of the worst vendor pages (blacksmiths in a couple of towns are really bad)

Average temps are usually below 60, but under the worst loads it will go to the mid 60s.

Before the fan adjustments it would run about 10C higher with less fan speed. And the change is not noisy either.

I am unable to adjust the fan settings on my laptop as it only has ONE fan. So it runs much hotter, mid 80Cs…

So you could have that issue going on, and its causing the card to crash on top of the driver/patch issues that is also going on.

Sucks though, I know.

Hey, I see you helping here in the forums a lot, I just want to say thank you! It’s not given by iteself, that you spend time to help others to fix their issues =)

The filed ticket gave me alot of steps to do, typical stuff and tried almost everything of it. I am working in IT but not on such a level, so I do have some knowledge, but when it comes to hardware, drivers etc. I usually just hope it works.

When I got this new PC I wanted to make sure I will not run into limits, that’s why it’s a RTX 4090 and it’s Watercooled. So my temps are mostly in the (30) avarage 40C° to like 60C° max. At least that’s what my tool is telling me. If 24GB VRAM is not sufficient for D4, what GPU are we supposed to get to run that game smoothly?

I also tried to play Baldurs Gate 3 for an hour a few days back with those drivers, I ended up playing 5 without any issue. I also played CP2077 in Psycho-Settings and Pathtracing enabled at nice FPS, so it really drives me crazy that D4, a blizzard game, that tends to run on the oldest Toaster you can find on this planet not running smooth on this machine.

I re-installed the game, after repairing it multiple times without any changes. I reset all my settings, uninstalled the high res texture pack, I am completely out of ideas :frowning:

And somehow sometimes the reply function seems to not work properly

I doubt memory is as big a problem as other aspects. Granted memory space helps games with large textures, but when I consider my laptop with 4GB, and my desktop with 8GB, both of them seem to play fine.

I run an i9 (12900k) with 32GB of DDR5, but only a 3070Ti. Yet, I play at 1440p, 100FPS at full Ultra.

The laptop is a bit lower, since its an 11400h, with 32GB DDR4, and a 3050Ti. However, it runs HD at 100FPS on High settings.

There have been mixed results with using older drivers, as well as latest driver with some different settings applied via the driver itself. You can find details here in my most recent post:

-I resolved my freezing issues - #2 by DTMAce-1687

I see, so yeah the amount of VRAM isn’t the factor, as it should be. So it’s really strange that some people have those issues, it was working fine on early access launch, on official launth on 6th June is had some issues here and there, but mostly fine. Each patch made it better or worse, but never to an extend that I couldn’t play. In the meanwhile everything else seem to work fine, so I always thought hopefully blizzard wil fix it at some point, but now it’s really a problem…

I saw this one, actually I tried those, I am on the latest NV driver and I changed the settings for D4 to deactivate that fallback logic. I suspected some cosmetics not working, but I was able to play a little for some time until it froze again, and those seem to be fine. It’s literally happening at random occurence without any reproducable steps. Can happen on opening the inventory, even on character select, talk to a vendor, open a chest, kill a mob that drops loot, port from waypoint to waypoint etc. It simply freezes and it’s then shut down after a few seconds, there is no debug log or any error reporter showing up, it just crashes to the desktop and that’s it.

Well.

To be honest, more people with higher end cards were having problems than those with lower end hardware during the first month after launch, funny enough.

Especially those on 3080 and 3090 cards. And a lot of Gigabyte cards had failures playing the game. But that’s due to a problem with the card quality and build than the game. It just stressed them hard enough that they failed prematurely.

I run an MSI card here, but I bought it used, blind off of eBay for a really good price. Got lucky I guess, installed it the same day the game launched (early launch date, not official launch date)

But honestly, mine has been near flawless. I had some adjustments that I cycled through, but my current list of settings for my desktop can be found here:

-Full breakdown of a system that plays Diablo IV without problems:

This is still the current setup for that tower. My laptop has more recently been changed, and at some point I should go over that in a similar fashion.

But I maintain 3 systems that play the game, 1 is my father’s OMEN laptop. His has been operating fine as well, but he is still running the older driver 535.98 that my desktop is.

Well, I have a gigabyte card… Was the only model on the market I was interested in, a tripple fan watercooled solution. Since I disliked those “as big as houses” 4090s from all other vendors. Actually my whole rig is mostly Gigabyte Hardware and it seems to run fine. I mean sure, I don’t play many games in parallel, but D4 is the first game having issues and those are better or worse on patch base, so it’s really hard to tell what is going on. I mean, I undervolt that 4090 by 40% to save some power, but of course I also went back to stock for D4, but it literally has no impact at all. It’s a freakin’ beast so I really wonder how that can cause such trouble if everything else just runs fine so far.

Thanks for the link! I will go through it and see how my Win 11 Pro also on latest regular update (Didn’t install the new big update, since it’s labeled as optional and brings a ton of changes) - Maybe I will find some settings I am not aware and try it out
I really hope I get this sorted out somehow :crossed_fingers:

I personally don’t have a huge issue with Gigabyte in builds I have put together over the years.

My last big gaming PC I built for someone was about 3k. That was mostly based on Gigabyte. Built that one about a year ago now. Same computer now would be a tad cheaper. GPUs were stupid expensive back then. Gigabyte (GB) 3070Ti for that system alone was almost 800. Mine was under 400, 6 months later. That had a GB Z790 motherboard with DDR5, 13700KF, 1&2TB GB SSDs and GB AIO 280 watercooler from them. Aorus versions of all of it with a 1000W PSU in a Pop Air XL case.

Turned out nice.

Also built a cheaper gaming tower this past March for someone, that plays WoT. And I custom themed the tower for him, giving it a military look with paint and decals that made it stand out. That one also had a Pop Air case, but the smaller one.

I enjoy building gaming rigs, don’t get to do those very often here, most people aroung here don’t buy those kind of computers. LOL

The last patch seemed to have fixed the problem for me, today I downloaded it and had no crash so far, could play like 4 hours without incidents.

I really really hope it stays like this
