Most of the time when I open up the inventory during gameplay, I get a big FPS dip for a couple of seconds. Ideally, it should be smooth and be able to open on the side while I game without affecting my performance. I will update this post with more details later, but I want to post my qualitative observation to poll if others notice the same.
Haven’t opened inventory and just let it sit there to monitor performance, but I will do some testing to see what exactly happens on opening inventory UI, besides FPS dip.
Not sure if this will help you since I know you’re using a 1440p, but I am also running a 3070 TI.
This video just shows how my settings are set up. I know you’re running a higher frequency on refresh, but it might not hurt to drop it a little bit lower especially since you’re running a 3070 not a 3070 TI, unless I’m mistaken abot that or missed it.
i know from personal experience in game coding myself in Unreal Engine(i know d4 is not using ue) but the moment you open your inventory, the game has to render your player character model on top of everything in the game world. and depending on your hardware, it may be taxing it a bit
Yeah and I suspect that may be a root cause. I would like the option to turn off player model in my inventory. Inventory is frequently used in games like this and it would be nice to be able to do stuff in it on the fly for a few seconds.
I’m also having this issue. Rtx 4080, i9 13900 kf, 32 gb ram. I play at 1440p 144hz everything cranked. I get 144 solid during playing but sometimes (often) when I open my inventory or map, the game drops major fps sometimes to 30-40fps. When I turn off Gsync I get 300+ fps.
There is zero reason for my build to drop to 30-40fps in this game unless something is seriously wrong with the game.
Also whenever I turn on Frame Generator, I get really bad traversal artifacts and it ruins the look for me. You can really notice it if you look near the health/mana orbs while running around.
How is it I can get 300+ fps in the game yet still get MAJOR fps drops and stutters to the point it feels like I’m playing it on a sh!t PC.
I mean the key differences between my setup and your two setups, is the screen size (HD vs 1440P) and you are both using Ultra. I’m also not using reflex or DLSS.
When I open inventory screens (and you can see this directly in the video) the only change for me is the temp, usage and power spikes. That’s it.
And because I’m running graphic settings purposefully lower (till Blizzard gets the optimization and bugs worked out) that will prevent me from hitting spikes or events that would overdrive the card, even momentarily. Hopefully to prevent a failure by lowering the stress. If the quality suffers a tad, that’s ok for now.
I do plan to update to a 1440 monitor with this card later this year. But not in a hurry.
another experiement i’d be curious about… is there a difference when you open your inventory when your inventory is empty vs full? a culprit could be how the game loops through your gear to check the server backend in order to refresh/pull the loot data you have and might hitch/stall while it waits for all the data to complete…
Those two aren’t as severe. Some information I gathered:
Loading screen with character render sits around 150 FPS and uses GPU 94% with 191W
Alt tabbing out drops FPS to 8 (how I set it up in D4, GPU wattage 41W and 7% utilized
Normal gameplay is 165 FPS, 49% utilization, 121W with 1 second spikes between regions the first go-around (this is all on DLSS Balanced)
Opening inventory drops FPS to like 40 with 95% GPU utilization for a couple of seconds before it comes back up to 151 FPS. I find opening the map behaves similarly.
Opening up the abilities tab drops FPS to 117 before going back up
Opening up the boons tab behaves similarly to the abilities tab. Overall, the other two tabs don’t have such severe drops but they do have drops nevertheless.
