Forced resolution, causes GPU overheating

Hello There Dear Developers, and fellow Demon Slayers out there!

Please Dear Blizzard, let us change the resolution in Diablo IV.

In D4 in the options menu the resolution is grayed out, and its only changes if I set my windows resolution to someting else.
I mean I have a decent rig (RTX 2070 Super 8 Gb, 32 Gb ram, etc). And Your game (which i still enjoy very much btw) forces me, to play at my windows resolution only?

I mean, I have a 4k capable GPU, and a screen to use it, yes in windows I use 4k, but in games I usually use 2k at max. My problem with resolution is that, it doesent matter if i set the shadows low, and other options even the lowest I can, because the forced 4k resolution my GPU overheats after a half maybe 1 hour, and my PC restarts itself. I’ve done some testing, and tested out some other games I have currently installed on my PC with the same options level, and 2k resolution for example, and guess what?

My GPU does not overheats when i play the other games, max temperature is 55 celsius even with an open window, and having 25+ celsius out there, ofc with the latest Nvidia driver.

Games I’ve tested with for example: Conan Exiles, and Middle Earth: Shadow of War. Both games run smoother, does not overheats my GPU, and didnt get any fps problems too (stuttering maybe???), heck in D4 I’ve even set the nvidia option to super performance, nothing get better…

If the grayed out resolution was a joke, than ok, we got it, but pls fix it ASAP.
I mean, come on its 2023 we’re living in…

Im not Angry or anything, just disappointed.

If anyone else having the some problem out there Shout out Guys and Girls.

Thx, Nomad

To be honest 8gb ram especially with 4k and modern titles, which neither conan exiles nor middle earth: shadow of war is, is more on the low end today unfortunately.
but looking at the amount of people having crashes or even bricking their gpu while playing d4 there is definitely something going on here that needs to be addressed, and for my understanding there is at least a memory issue.
Locking the resolution though certainly doesn’t help when it comes to trying to work around this.

Hello!

Thanks for joining in, and replying.

I’ve done some further testing, in nvidia options i downscaled my original native 16:9 4k resolution to 1920x1080, and tried out the new settings ingame, and woala the gpu temperature doesent even reach the 50 celsius, before the changes, it went up to around 90 celsius or even upper and the computer restarted after a black screen crash. Altough i have to say the downscaled 4k looks worse, but nothing horrible to me after the 4k of course, doesent matter that i use 50 or 100% image sharpening or even 0 %, to me 0% sharpenign looks the best.

I think there is something wrong with the 4k resoultion handleing in the game.
In the betas i had 0 problem with the same settings with the native 4k and almost everything in ultra…

I give Blizzard 1-2 weeks to adress the issue with not letting us setting the resolution ingame, becouse now i need to rescale my resolution in windows before every start of the game, that is in 2023 is a pure joke…

Same here. I have 16 GB DDR4, and 2 8 GB DDR5 Radeon RX 480s. I got 3 out of memory errors so far playing on 4K, the 4th time my GPU overheated so much my PC just shot itself down. Then I had trouble even starting it bc it wouldn’t even boot up. After taking it apart and reassembling I flushed the Bios and found that Anti surge got turned on which caused the boot to fail bc Asus MOBOs anti surge detection is too touchy and any tiny spike can cause a failed boot.
I tried the 1080p option by setting my screen to that resolution in Windows, but D4 looks terrible and choppy in 1080p even with everything on max.
Decided to just buy more RAM to round it up to 32 GB. Damn thing cost me almost double the amount I bought it for last time because that specific RAM module insn’t produced anymore, so only a few sticks left probably. I would have been better off buying 32 GB on higher frequency, but whatever. Might ended up paying a bit more actually.
I plan to upgrade my entire rig next year anyway. I want to buy either the RTX 5090 or 5090 Ti, depending how much Ti improves on the base model. They say it will be a next Nvidia milestone bc it will have dedicated denoise chips that will make denoising 60% better. In the past I didn’t want an RTX because I felt the tech wasn’t matured enough yet. Now RTX 5090 seems like it will bring a more stable ray tracing performance.
They will add ray tracing to Diablo 4 sometime in the future, so it will demand even more performance. Hope the RTX 5090 is up to handle that.
Wonder if team Radeon is showing up with anything in the same range. Their delayed jump on ray tracing cost them, so their only saving grace is more stable 4K cards and cheaper offers. I was Team Radeon so far because of that and because Nvidia is still outrageously expensive, but I saved up enough I feel to buy the RTX 5090 if it will be better than Radeons top card next year.
