For the love of god, fix the memory leak

Really dont have a potato, but it is funny to joke about. If I could play WoW at max settings and literally every other game i own, there is nothing taxing about D4 that should be killing my memory.

But sure, we can keep doing this thing where brainlets on here dig into the deepest recesses of their smooth brains and post “yOu’Re oN a pOtAto!”

I have a pretty new machine, no expense spared…and unless I have my laptop plugged in, the game will crash or run noticeably slower. Between software CPU task management, efficiency & performance cores, dual-GPU cards, etcetera; you may be being throttled and not realize it. Look into power management features online, or do simple testing to see if it resolves your issues.

I think the worst part about this, is the fact that it doesn’t do this for most systems.

I have tested it extensively since launch. I have never had it eat memory till it crashed.

I have ran out of memory only once, and that was because Firefox had consumed most of it, after leaving it running in the background. Once I shut that down though, it was fine.

I just upgraded to the 4080 Super today. Already have been gaming on it. If anything it plays so much better, smoother and has less in game latency than the system did running a 3070 Ti. In-game latency (system responsiveness, not internet) is now hovering between 5-6ms, whereas before it was about 9ms. FPS is now a solid 165, matching my 1440p monitor refresh rate and at full ultra. Before it was capped to 100FPS, as the 3070 Ti couldn’t quite keep the FPS steady at 165, it tended to bounce.

Monitoring the game’s resource consumption, it is using most of the card’s memory, just like before, but now it has twice as much to use. But as a note, I see it uses a bit more system memory too. Which may be related to that.

It perhaps seems that having a higher bandwidth card with more memory may actually force the game to use more overall memory.

After all, the high res packs are data consuming, and the system can get quite busy moving game files in and out.

Still. Game plays just as well as it always has for me. Will continue to test.

But back to the potato thing. There has been well documented cases where the potato machines often play better longer than some of the high end builds. Funny that.

Game on.

I have many memory leaks error on D4 only. I’d say one every hour.
I only have this problem since i did a clean install, from W10 to W11.
But i did this the same day as the 1.3 went live so i can’t tell if W11 is the issue or the 1.3+ patch…

But even if it’s a brand new W11, i have already played a lot of very “big” games since and never had any issue except with Diablo 4, so…

I won’t buy 2 To of RAM to balance the game issue.
There is a lot of users here and reddit which have a lot of troubles since 1.3 (crashs, memory leaks, etc…) so i’d guess the issue is more on the game than on all PC suddenly becoming out of service just for one game !

It isnt the fact that its a “hardware” issue, you increased the overall headroom for the issue. It is still there no matter what hard drive you have it still leaks. It needs to be fixed the solution shouldnt be go buy ram worth 4 copies of the game.

Solution is to uninstall the hires assets. Modify your install.

I would post in CS forum. This game needs some major fixing but I haven’t heard of that issue before.

Common issues with memory problems are overlays. Make sure you have no overlays including closing the battle.net window, amd/nvidia game overlays.

And its summer, make sure if you have liquid cooling it didn’t pop all over your motherboard.

Objectively you are just wrong. I have a Ryzen 7 3700x and a 3080 with 32gb of ram and I run every other game on high with 0 issues. It’s the game.

Because the information available and general knowledge of how computers actually work dictate that this is likely a personal hardware issue (or at the very least, is D4 related and HIGHLY specific to your hardware/software configuration) as many more people would be experiencing this issue otherwise.

You know, I have basically the same specs, and single instance okay, if I have two, I eat up all my memory and have an issue.

When I removed the hires assets, I had no problems running 2 instances.

Tracking my memory usage, I was really at 32 gb with the hires assets in play.

There is a 2 instance bug that occasionally causes a hard freeze when you close one of the two, but it’s very hard to understand and only occurs with long play times with both instances open.

You kind of know it’s going to happen when you have some weird stuttering and stuff going on and netlag. it’s weird because it hits my netflix stream as well, so I wonder if there’s something going on the the vram side of things in addition.

Do you have an intel?
I had lots of problem with my top of the line with my intel machine (and it seems to be a common problem)
But then I changed to AMD and… it all worked out well since then!

Last I heard intel might have found the problem, but as to the solution, for us consumer… I am not quite sure.

I never had any issues before the start of season 5 though and I only run 1 instance.

Have a bunch of necromancers in this thread–no corpse is safe.

Also, the lagginess has more or less been gone as seasons have gone on. Figures

So for me, the leak seems to be happening with virtual memory, not my physical RAM. Usage for physical RAM is staying pretty flat once it plateaus, but my virtual memory will keep increasing until it gets to 99.9% usage, computer will then lock up for like 30-45 seconds and I will see virtual memory decrease in chunks back down to around 70% before it starts making the inevitable climb back to 99.9%. The cycle takes about 1-2 hours of game time. Rinse repeat.

Granted, I took a long break from D4. Haven’t played since Season 1, but didn’t encounter these issues before.

Have you tried setting a fixed swap file size?

-Diablo IV has run out of memory - #103 by DTMAce-1687

Follow those suggestions, but use the size of 32768 (32GB) for your swap size for both Min and Max as explained above.

That should help. However there are other things that can also mitigate the issue if needed.

Anno or City Skylines.

2 things:

  1. this post is over a year old

  2. you cant read because the original post stated that D4 would lock up and freeze, not that my laptop would

Get off the forums and work on your abysmal reading comprehension, you
