FOMO before Release

“FOMO” is a you problem. Companies leverage this against people with that problem. If it works on you? RIP. As for if it’s “Scummy” or not? No. It’s basic psychology that companies have been using on their gullible idi… I mean, on their customers, for centuries.

I played the Beta because I wanted more D4, and had free time this weekend. Getting the trophy was just a cool extra artificial carrot on the stick for me. Now that it’s over, I’m back to playing Zelda. Time to go find some stupid freakin’ Koroks and drop rocks on their heads.

What I think is ef’d up about it is that we will likely replace the trophy with some other trophy that better matches a set of gear or maybe was obtained via a harder challenge, so the toenail might even get used… but the feat of strength is forever… that’s what people don’t want to miss out on. Of course it would be great to live in a world where recognition for work amongst our peers was not so difficult to obtain that we have to resort to digital trophies, but that’s not life for most people.

same reasoning can be applied to any scam ever done to anyone.

This is correct. It’s like blaming old people for being gullible on the phone while they get scammed, and saying the scammer is innocent of anything.

I think it is a good strategy to attract players to test your servers.

Someone says you aren’t good and you bust out the toenail. They don’t have it. You won.

I see a lot of folks that Blizzard need a hook to draw people into stress testing the server. But on the flip side, they could have done the same with something that didn’t rely on group effort and limited spawns?

Fomo works in the same way drug addiction latches on to people, it should not be a thing but people make it a thing.

Fomo is for weak minded gamers that cannot control their compulsive need for useless crap for a tiny spike of dopamine.

This problem started with the zoomers

Unobtainables gain value over time. People attrite and new players come. Toenail is an ace in the hole for mount/trophy contests in 2026.

everyone is weak-minded. it’s our flaw. stop thinking this doesn’t apply to you.

Wow, you have my sympathy for the all the self-induced anxiety you create with your own fabricated FOMO if you’re already afraid of losing out in your imaginary contest in a few years.

Gotta disagree here, only because FOMO, in one shape or another, has been around for all of human history. Limted goods, special sales, deals, fabricated scarcity (See: diamonds). The term FOMO may have gained popularity with the zoomies, but it’s been around since the good days, long, long, LONG before the Zoomers, Boomers, X’ers, and Doomers were around.

Sorry you missed out. The fear must have been crippling.

I knew you would respond to me because I exploited your impulsive nature.

You wouldn’t be playing video games, nor would you be on the forums for them if you were not weak minded. Stop thinking you are special.

The trophy could be awarded to whoever joined the boss event… but the achievement ‘early victory’ should be exclusive to the ones who managed to beat the world boss tho, since the prerequisite of this title is to actually beat the boss, it would be a shame to just give the title to everyone.

Oh I didn’t miss out, I got it, but this isn’t about getting or not getting it. More about the idea of psychological manipulation pre-release in a public test. Not sitting well with me is all.

Crippling fear can do that to you

They arent giving you fomo, a psychological issue is. Go seek help.

Thats a you problem, not a them problem.

Rewarding people for doing things is good.

You fearing you wont get the reward isnt their problem.

This entire “I might not get it” or “I didnt get it so they are creating fomo” outlook is pathetic, and typical of todays society, attempting to blame anything and everything else for someones own shortcomings.

Stop it.
