First time ever trying Hardcore in an ARPG

So i just wanna share my experience with this game, i leveled to 100 on softcore and beat all the bosses with bad gear in like 30h of gameplay, then i had nothing left to do, game felt easy and booring. So i saw on reddit someone saying to try Hardcore.
I never ever played hardcore in an arpg, this was my first time. Here is what i experienced playing hardcore:

  1. Leveling a charracter and figthing feels meaningfull cus you cant do mistakes that can cost your life.
  2. After leveling to 50 game becomse so much fun because you actually have to really put effort in farming good gear to progress withowt dying, min maxing is amazing now and game feels challangeing.
  3. No more “game is too easy” you can easaly die if you dont pay attention and have bad gear.
  4. Hardcore is super fun because every upgrade to gear you make is meaningfull, minmaxing to beat lilith is a superb meaningfull grind.
  5. I just fell inlove with hardcore mode and i wanted to share my experience. Ty for reading, and if you perhaps think the game is too easy, give hardcore a try maybe you will like it.
  6. Time spent playing hardcore is time spent playing like in softcore, when charracter dies you have to make anoather and focus on getting good gear and making less mistakes. In softcore u get bored and switch charracters. Thats just like dying in hardcore and making a new charracter. Its not so bad to die because you can start a new char and have fun leveling it , trying not to die and actually having a decent challange in the game.

Have fun guys!!

Im fine here, op. But super happy you enjoy this kind of challenge. Im not cut out for this.

And in a couple of week you will regret because you will die by server issue

Lag Spike is indeed a most fearsome opponent in hardcore. Even so I do keep coming back. :metal:

i played d4 since launch and never had server issues, i think im fine, but time played hardcore=time played softcore , if u died u just make a new char, no problem because leveling is actually fun and engaging whe you play hardcore. I got a 1gb fiber internet connection, everything has been super smooth, if you have internet isues i can see that hardcore might not be fun. Anyways to each its own, have fun playing whatever you find fun. The post is just an appreciation towords the hardcore mode!

My man.
Server issues means it’s not you that’s having internet issues. It’s the servers bricking down.
You can have one blizzilion-bites of gluten free fiber internet connection and it won’t help you in the slightest.

I´ve been in your position at D3. Since than I play mostly HC.
It is really hard to explain to to SC player HC is somehow much more fun than SC.

Problem with D4 there is really bad optimalization and svr issues and that can break the fun (Never had problem with other games and even preseasson and s1 was smooth) but I am facing freezing and lags in s2.

Anyway welcome to HC, its really much better gameplay loot. And considering how super ez is this seasson it was good time to try HC for first.

I have been playing hardcore only in arpg Games since d2. Never turned Back to softcore, ITS that much more fun…giving the achieved Things a meaning.

OP: you will lose your char one time, but…dont forget you have These Scrolls of escape which Port you Out of Trouble immediately.
Bind them to your actions wheel!!

When the are bound to the actions wheel they will even Work in Case of Serverside Problems as far as i know.

I simply forgot to use them two Times now and died, but I dont care

Stay Safe

Have to admit I am not a fan of soe and tha potion. Its like HC light at best.

You just can´t die if your game is running…pop potion? soe…

You like what you like, and that’s great.

But there are way too much permutations that make playing HC a bigger risk to take in a live service game like Diablo IV. I’d have a better odds of winning a lottery than have a consistent connectivity to the game and not have lag spikes or disconnection ruin my experience in this game.

I’ll stick to normal mode, thank you.

With all the lag issues, disconnects, and bugged mechanics…only an idiot would roll hardcore.

I get wanting a challenge, but if all things were equal i could see it. Dying to a players lack of skill is one thing, but lets say you level to 85 and then get all your hard work thrown away because of lag or a disconnect?

Naw…i am good.

I don’t see the appeal of hardcore at all but I’m happy you’re happy.

When I play it I don’t all of a sudden think to myself oh wow this is so much better. It’s the same game but if you die you might have to start all over.

I understand that Hardcore makes the game more meaningful for some players, but the thing is; I don’t want to lose my progress. I’m fine with death consequences and penalties, but to me Diablo is about progression and if I invest 500 hours playing the same character, I don’t want to lose it all.

The game can be meaningful and rewarding without losing everything on death. The current Softcore could be much better in that regard, but on the other hand, Hardcore is not a much better option.

Hardcore sounds cool, but in reality the difficulty isn’t that different compared to Softcore. While playing I want to constantly take the maximum amount of risks and in Hardcore mode I would need to restrain myself from doing so, thus making the game less fun.

As a casual arpg player, I played HC only in D3, but there were few reasons for that. Leveling was super fast, there was some form of progression shared with parangon, and seasons were a bit longer.
In D4 I am playing hardcore occasionally on Eternal, but not in seasons.
I agree its generally more fun to play hardcore, but it also may take a bit more time if you get uncautious or unlucky.

I enjoy HC occasionally, but as others have stated, D4 and hardcore mode are a complete gamble. Theres a very high chance the instability of this game will be your worst enemy.

Also, as someone above pointed out, things like SoE make the mode completely subjective, and only further highlite the fact that theres a good chance you could die from something not in your control. Its the entire reason the scroll was made. O,o. Doesnt even seem so hardcore anymore… just a gimmick.

Either way, enjoy what you enjoy mate.

With the latency issues I have from time to time with this game I would NEVER play hardcore. I have died probably a half dozen times during lag spikes. No way ever.

Hardcore is how I prefer to play ARPGs in general.

D2 and D3 all I played was HC and I’ll be swapping over to HC soon in D4 as well. With all the new systems in place at D4’s launch I decided to give the first few goes in SC so I could see how everything operated. My plan for now is to swap over to HC in either S3 or Eternal Realm - haven’t made that decision yet tbh

And yes OP… the huge thing that HC gives you is a lot of meaning to every inch of power and a good few hits of adrenaline =)

Playing Hardcore is actually in the spirit of the original Rogue or roguelike games, which are the predecessor of Diablo/“aRPGs”. In away, it’s how it’s meant to be played!

Hardcore would be fine if it wasn’t for the Butcher. It’s the only reason I’ll never enjoy hardcore. You don’t feel like you died because you messed up. It feels cheap and frustrating.

Its strange how Diablo franchise (mostly d2) has always gotten the halo for this genre… i seem to recall playing original gauntlet (and other similiar games) long before diablo 1 was out… maybe im just too old and have my time lines all messed up, but im fairly certain thats the case.

I guess its because of the items diablo brought with it… ahhh fun times. They were all pretty good given their era.
