[Feedback] Item Tooltip UI Adjustments for PC (image + text)

Here you go

Edit - I personally prefer the Affix associated with the Legendary to be up top where it makes it very clear that yes, this is THE special affix this bow has.

Thanks!

Zadok and OP did a great job here. I was reluctant to think so at first but I came around pretty quickly after staring at them for a bit. I think Blizz should definitely get some inspiration from these.

I kinda like it at the bottom. It just looks neater and doesn’t draw my eyes away when looking at the rest of the info.

Why does one affix appear separated to the others though? Is there an actual reason for this to indicate something?

For example in the first image the text that reads “+12.0% Damage to Distant Enemies” appears above the line included with the damage per hit and attacks per second info.

Why is that?

A UI update is coming, just not for launch. You will all get the UI rework you want, hopefully its nice.

What I really want to see more than that is UI’s that are customized to the system its running on. So each system gets its own custom UI designed with its controller type in mind. In particular a UI that has been customized to work on PCs that is seperate from the console UI.

The current one is too reliant on methods that are good for controllers but mouse and keyboard is a superior option for me and I think I am not the only one that feels this way.

I think that affix category is going to always be on that item. The other affixes below are random except the legendary power. If I got that wrong someone correct me please.

Which is why I prefer the assigned affixes to all be together at the top, and the randomly generated ones below. Those random ones can also be changed at the enchanter/mystic person.

Ah ok that makes sense. Thanks for info.

I see your logic, but when it comes to visual design I always like things that draw my eyes to the correct places.

A lot of the big Diablo art pieces are great examples of this. There’s a lot going on in Diablo art works but they are so well balanced with splashes of colour in the right places, pushing your eyes across the landscape and slowly through the middle and into the centre to the central focus.

Because the UI is a visual artwork I would like it to follow these visual design principles.

The legendary affix being at the bottom allows me to scan down the item, without being distracted by the big orange text at the top, slowly having my eyes drawn to the legendary affix at the bottom.

It indeed is personal preference, no need to deny that from my part, just like the opposite is personal preference as well.

There are people who prefer one over the other and think one is better / easier to read than the other, and people who completely feel the opposite, and both perspectives are valid. That maybe could be a bit more emphasized in the original post.

It is a personal preference, one that I and many others share (and other people feel differently) an it is utilizing the Gestalt Principles of Similarity and Proximity, eventually even the Principle of “Common Fate”, when you think about in a way that the Image “moves” the Stats further to the right, hence indicating they belong to the same or similar category.

“mis-aligning” it is utilizing the Gestalt Principles of Proximity and Similarity.

I agree that the DPS Value should not the be focus, but Casuals and Blizzard seem to like it + on an Armor Item the DPS Value would be Armor, so I went with it a bit as a compromise.

Both reasons are valid. It solves / improves various issues both in the original and the rework and also makes both version look better overall (imo).

I have gotten this feedback so often now that I start to believe that this a much larger issue than I initially thought.
While I and others don’t really mind, it seems that for a not insignificant amount of people this is really a larger issue… and also one that is easier to fix.

^^I like this rework from Zadok as well^^
Definitely prefer it over the original.

Yeah, it makes the affix stand out even more, indicating that it is the special thing a Legendary has.

I agree with Cheetah, the unique affix on top of the item tooltip is better.
At one glance you know if you require that affix or not. The other stats are displayed after the special affix are just boosts to the item.
Also the requirements listed on the row below is also clearer and cleaner.

Some of the aspect text is very long. Having at the top not only detracts from the actual stats on the item but forces your attention to the wrong place.

The aspect text should be at the bottom. It’s there for a reason. Contrary to popular belief Blizzard and their creative design team do actually know better than random people on the internet with no real world design experience.

The tooltips have a couple of minors issues, but they’re vastly more appealing than what’s been posted on this page.

Sorry but I beg to disagree.
Everytime a Legendary drops, I’ll home in on the unique Affix.
Putting it below on the last sentence just takes me more time to look at it.
After all, if Legendary are transient items before we find better Rare items and fix an Aspect to them, their normal stats aren’t even considered when I decide to equip or unequip a Legendary. Only their unique Affixes matter and that is why should be placed on top.

Thanks for teaching me how to embed the link without being flagged as trying to post a link. As I figured it out and was editing my post, they deleted my thread. :frowning:

My pleasure!

oof, what happened?
Did they gave a reason for that? Or was it automatically removed as you updated it?

I actually really liked your rework.
It was in many/most key things very similar to the one I did.

yeah, someone…
Honestly I would feel weird if I personally post it there.
Would almost feel too pushy, dunno why.

I had just finished updating some of it, it was very odd… Then it told me that the page didn’t exist, and in my inbox threads it was gone completely, then it just randomly came back… super sus… automod / bug perhaps?

thanks

That is the spam filter. It tends to eat posts that have a lot of links and a lot of editing. It is hidden for mod review but I don’t know if they will get around to restoring it or not. Yes, that filter is automated.

So far, Zodak’s thread has not been restored. :frowning:

You know what, I put your rework / concept in my original post as well.
That way, in case the devs see this thread, they are also gonna see yours.

In the meantime I made another concept for how the D2 Runeword ‘Breath of the Dying’ could look like in D4 in the context of a reworked UI - and this one does not have Italic in it.

I am still open for thoughts, suggestions for improvements and feedback.

I have embedded your image for you. I have THINGS to do right now so not commenting at this second.

Awesome! Thank you! :hearts:
Much appreciated!

Looks nice. Well done. Not complaining, but blizzard likes their flavor texts, you need a spot for that still. It is fun to read those sometimes. that is what causes the scrolling issues sometimes though.
