As I was replying to another thread it occurred to me that not providing fan service was likely Blizzards biggest mistake. While I enjoy this game for what its worth, and realize it has some flaws that need to be worked out…I also understand that this is Diablo 4. The 4th installment in a storied franchise that began a new genre of gaming, defined the expectations of a generation of gamers, and catapulted Blizzard into AAA status.
I highly doubt a Diablo 5 is in the pipeline inside the next decade, and while the gaming industry evolves, why didnt they just give us the last hoorah here…
I like this game, but for anyone who likes the game - you truly have to consider why they didnt give us the truck load. Why didnt we get the culmination of 20 years worth of ideas and concepts refined and focused into one game that puts a cap on our nostalgia and opens a new bottle of hype juice…
As a live service game, I can understand why future content would be trickled in, but Im talking about content that already exists from past titles, and isnt new, that players already liked - we didnt even get a piece of that.
I just think about legendary entertainment frachises that had final installments, or big releases that just opened the flood gates of fan service and showed how they truly appreciated all the years of dedicated loyalty to their product…and while I believe we didnt get a horrible game, we sure as all hell didnt get a fan service game - which we should have received.
Diablo 1 and 2 both released before WoW. Blizzard had already pushed fans expectations high when WoW finally released. WoW kept them afloat, Diablo gave them a name.
Becuase not providing fan service when launching a new installment for an entertainment franchise that has existed for 20 years is an even better idea…
Every one of these comes down to “Blizzard didn’t make a game perfectly tailored to my individual tastes”. What I find hilarious is that, in my case, so far, they kind of did.
While I think d1 and d2 are big reasons for the success of blizzard, let’s not forget about all the original warcraft games and the original StarCraft.
Future content being trickled in is one thing…when said content was simply removed from the base game during development because they had nothing else to build on, that’s something else entirely.
