Hello, if Im understanding the new exp calculations method correctly. If the goal is EXP farming, It is completely pointless to run nightmare dungeons where the monsters are more than 10 levels higher? Correct? If this is not correct, please post an example of calculations or provide a reference.
As of 1.1.0A you would be correct based on the wording of the patch notes. The experience bonus caps at a 15% bonus at +10 levels and so does what they call the “monster level offset”.
From playtests, as a level 89:
Dead man's dredge
Tier 47 (Ghoul 101) -> 228.332 -> 229.779 => 1447 xp
Tier 57 (Ghoul 111) -> 232.162 -> 233.609 => 1447 xp
So there is no XP benefit into running NMD tier that have mobs level higher than your level+10.
(expand) That was just wrong
There is three things to take into account when you focus XP/h:
- Mob base XP: based on actual monster and its current level
- Level difference with that said mob: there is a bonus for killing monster higher level than you, topping at +10 level higher than you.
- mob kill count per hour
So let say you are level 50 and kill a level 60 mob. This mob have a base XP of 60, then you add the bonus based on the level difference to it, +50% for example (5%/level, I just don’t remember if it’s actually that bonus value per level). The mob then reward you with 60+(60*0.5)=60+30=90XP
.
But the same mob, if being 70 instead, reward you with 70 base XP. Then it became 70+(70*0.5)=70+35=105XP
.
What is capped is the bonus based on the level difference, not the base XP.
So “Is it worth to run NMD with mob level higher than 10+ my level” ? Yes it is, as long as the time needed to kill mobs doesn’t outweigh the benefit of their higher level/baseXP.
It’s actually only 1.5% xp per level now. So max 15% at +10. But thank you for the other details. I was wondering if there is a higher monster base and wasn’t sure. So yeah, makes sense that you want to kill whatever highest you can kill with the least amount of slowdown.
IIRC, the max exp gain of a NM dungeon is your current level MINUS 44.
.
For example: a lvl 64 char will reach max exp gain in a (64-44 ) level 20 NM dungeon.
I wish tier 1 NM dungeon corresponded with level 51, 2 with 52 and so on to 100 with 150. Would be so much simpler to keep track of what number you want instead of needing quick math every time
u do get better gear (theoretically) and more completion bonus… though i doubt it’s worth it.
do you mean monster level +10 or dungeon tier +10?
if monster level +10, there is absolutely no reason to run anything higher as the EXP gained caps at +10 monster levels above your own. for the sake of speed only, there is zero reason to ever do anything for exp where monsters are more than +10.
if you mean nm TIER level, then hell no its not worth it at all. if you are 65 and you run a tier 75 nm dungeon you will be getting the same exp as if you were running a tier 21.
tl;dr: no. its NOT worth running anything higher than +10. monster level OR tier level.
this is strictly for exp gain only, which is what OP was asking about. nothing else.
I mean “monster level”, thank for pointing that, it’s now fixed
Is it worth to run NMD with mob level higher than 10+ my level

Will double check that because I’m pretty sure that the total xp (base + bonus) is not capped at all, only the bonus which is then 15% of the base XP.
Directly from blizzard:
For Example:
You are Level 1. Your friends bring you to World Tier IV and leave you at the entrance of a dungeon. They start killing Level 100 monsters. (this also works for you killing things yourself)
You get: (Level 11 Monster XP) * (1 + 15%) (which is the bonus that caps at +10).
there IS a cap. 10 levels above your own level. its more than the 15% bonus because of the initial 10 levels above, but it IS capped.
those are directly from Blizzard’s patch notes when they changed it btw. it is still working like this currently. exp is capped at +10 regardless of if the enemies are higher than that.
it USED to be capped at +100 level difference but it was changed for patch 1.1.0a
After testing, sadly …
As a level 89:
Dead man's dredge
Tier 47 (Ghoul 101) -> 228.332 -> 229.779 => 1447 xp
Tier 57 (Ghoul 111) -> 232.162 -> 233.609 => 1447 xp
Editing my posts above …
Yep, correct. I does not give more Xp above +10 Levels.
Additional Question:
As overworld mobs are now ~5 Levels lower, do they give less Xp and therefor making overworld farming fully pointless?
Honestly, killing monsters 10 levels higher is the fastest way to gain XP, assuming you can kill them quickly. If you’re killing monsters only 5 levels higher three times as fast, you’re probably better off with the +5 monsters.
yes.
the only reason to kill things on the overworld now is helltides and WB. also if you want to kill the unique enemies or do quests.
doing it solely for exp tho, it is absolutely pointless.
Dug up this thread again to update any confusion, based on more reading. Looks like @Gurki already edited his post too.
There is NO xp benefit (you still get better loot and glyph xp) for running anything more than 10 levels higher than you. The 15% bonus stops at +10 and the monster base xp scaling ALSO stops at +10.
Going the other way, monsters give 10% xp less for every level they are lower than you. So with most world monsters being 5 levels lower than you, they are giving you 50% of their lower base xp to begin with (so you’re effectively getting like 25% worthless xp from them - I hate this world scaling change) . The xp nerf goes to -10 levels at which point they give you 1xp.
Detailed, relevant patch notes.
We are adjusting bonus experience rewards for killing monsters that are a higher Level than the player.
Pre-Season of the Malignant bonuses:
1 Level higher: +15%.
2 Levels higher: +20%.
3+ Levels higher: +25%.
Post-Season of the Malignant:
1.5% bonus per Level up to 10 Levels.
Ex:
+1 level: +1.5%.
+2 levels: +3%.
+10 levels: +15%.
We are also adjusting experience rewards for monster Level offsets for higher World Tiers.
Current World Tier Level offsets
World Tier II: Up to +3.
World Tier III: Up to +10.
World Tier IV: Up to +100.
We are changing this to
World Tier II: Up to +3 (Unchanged).
World Tier III: Up to +6.
World Tier IV: Up to +10.
For Example:
You are Level 1. Your friends bring you to World Tier IV and leave you at the entrance of a dungeon. They start killing Level 100 monsters.
Prior to Season of the Malignant, you get:
(Level 100 Monster XP) * (1 + 25%)
After Season of the Malignant, you get:
(Level 11 Monster XP) * (1 + 15%)
