Early Thoughts on S8

So this is not a bash S8 post. It’s also not a S8 is great post. Just some early observations.

  1. The Battlepass revision is quite disappointing. They jacked up the price and didnt give as much back. Inflation has hit everywhere and its starting to hit in-game purchases. What I really dislike about it is that to get all of the requiem you have to purchase the premium battlepass which I never have before. Why? just play the game and get the unlocks, I dont need to pay extra to speed it up, and I bet many others werent either, and they had to change it. Unfortunately.

  2. I just got to level 60 last night and did not find the leveling to 60 too tedious (from someone who hates it BTW). It felt like a decent pace. I’m not sure why some users feel this way. I tend to take my time though and finally plan on going to T1 today after work.

  3. The D4 community is so split it feels like politics. One group wants the game to be slow and challenging and the other just a slashfest they can cruise their way through. Nothing is wrong with either opinion. I think that is what they were trying to accomplish with T4 being so difficult (allegedly-I’m not there yet). If gamers want to cruise through, why not just stop on T2 or T3? Are the rewards that much better on T4? If it suits the way you want to play the game, why not stay in a lower difficulty? If other gamers want the challenge, T4 is for you. I dont see why we cant have both, so I think the increased challenge overall is good but I do feel like the increased challenge should be centered in T3 and T4.

  4. The item drops dont seem that bad. At around level 40 (I think) I had legendaries in every slot (in expert difficulty). Thats a decent balance. I dont think thats unreasonable. Did every legendary fit with my build? Of course not. But that is to be expected.

  5. The seasonal content is eh. Last season’s content in the headhunter zones was much better. For introducing Belial something a lot beter should have been done. And I agree that is just feels like we swapped witch powers for boss powers.

  6. Very curious about the challenge creep from T2 to T3 to T4. Also havent faced any of the tormented bosses yet-but everyone-boss phasing has been around in video games for ages. Is it reallllly that bad or cant you just wait the extra 30 seconds to crush them?

I can agree with your perception. I was all legendary around lvl 35, nothing perfect and nothing too horrible. Hit 60 last night so leveling felt good… I accomplished this on hard.

Stepped into T1 last night for a brief time and felt like I expected, not enough armor or resistance and died a few times; but damage felt right.

1 - We’re getting far less cosmetics for free in the long run, there’s no doubt about that. The Premium Deluxe Double Bacon BP also only gives you 2 extra cosmetics and unlocks the cosmetic gear you would get through the normal bought BP (for 1K) faster. Not to mention the total amount of cosmetics we’re seeing is much less than it was previously over all.

2 - They changed it from the PTR, it’s faster than it was in the PTR, but not as fast as S7. Overall I’m fine with it myself.

3 - Welcome to the vocal minority, pick a side or stay neutral. The issue isn’t the community, the issue is the devs are trying to cater to all sides by constantly flip flopping back and forth when a particular side gets upset over a recent change.

Wife and I only hit 47 last night, so I can’t comment too much on anything else for the moment. Seasonal content does seem lackluster from what we’ve played, a little more restrictive than the previous season for sure. Personally speaking my first impression it’ll be just be a bland season, nothing too memorable. Not horrible, but not great.

As a side note, the ability to teleport to any party member from anywhere is a great change, I hated having to go back to a main town to join some one.

Loot progression is somewhat ok. I also had a few uniques around lvl 30 and almost all legendaries around lvl 40 and onwards. The problem is, almost no build is fun/playable without certain aspects, so forcing you to play the first 25-30 levels with blue/yellow items does not elevate the player experience. I’m not sure how they would solve it without overhauling every single skill tree and vastly improving them, but as of now early game is definitely not very fun. I think they should sprinkle more uniques in between lvl 20-40 so that people can get ideas how to shape their leveling builds better.

Other than that, I didn’t like the season event, I mean it is ok but it doesn’t feel rewarding and the seasonal progression(both the quest and the battlepass) feel extremely slow. It might be a bit early to say this(I haven’t touched end game yet) but this season feels the worst so far.

Yes, this was a problem… Leveling build. Sorc this season and I think I had 2 core, 1 mastery and basic all different elements due to the way things dropped.

The level 60 grind is brutal, but gets significantly better when you enter Torment 1. You can gain reputation and points to increase power from doing things besides the incursions. Lair bosses (and I think the pit strangely enough) grant reputation and power points. Definitely helps with variety of activities.

I dont find that seasonal event a fun repeat either so this is good to know.
