I’m new to this genre, but I do believe it’s a bug to not be able to attack without the bear skill. Upon leveling up, I chose the bear skill, and it ended up replacing my primary attack with the werebear morph attack.
I have no way to regain the basic attack skill to just use the equipped weapons in my two hand slots, as going through the “Skill Assignment” tab only shows my bear morph attack skill.
Also encountered with the necromancer. The equipped weapons are not available for selection in the skill window.
All classes start with a placeholder attack skill at level 1, which is replaced by the Basic skill you spec into when you first level up. So whichever skill you select when you hit level 2 becomes your basic attack.
how do you use main weapon to hit ennemies then ??? (new to diablo, sorry )
Main weapon stats (attack speed, damage, etc…) are applied to all of your attacks, but you will not see the weapon in use while you are using shapeshifting skills.

The thing that makes this confusing is that if you’re coming in new to D4, it’s really easy to make nonsense skill assignments. I did the same with Necro. I didn’t realize how the skills worked so I had skeleton on left mouse and blood on 1. So when I encountered the bear, I was clicking on it and just running around.
And then later, when I got the ability to upgrade my skeletons, it looked like a progression instead of a choice, so I went for the far right and immediately lost my skeleton army.
I may not be a particularly bright player, but it looks like I’m not the only one thrown off by unintuitive UI.
I have this issue as well - necro - from what I understood, this happens on multiple classes.
without the basic attack, you can’t “break” containers. only using the dodge skill which has a cooldown. not efficient at all.
The replacement to the basic attack should be able to break containers.
It does all basic skills can do it. Just use it on the container either directly or with with Shift + click the skill in direction of it.
Works no problem.
For example Reap go near container hold shift and click the skill. Your necro will do the animation breaking the containers.
This is so dumb and game-breaking for me. I used to love collecting new fancy weapons. Now what’s the point, I can’t really use them past level 5. I think some dev messed up and forgot to add a slot for basic attack and now they have doubled down
