Lots of conversations going on about how this has been affected negatively in the expansion.
The problem appears to be that Blizzard are trying to balance an issue where drop rates of items, and character progression matches the duration of a season, such that you have enough time to get to end game… and enjoy it, before the next season begins.
Now, given that the rate at which different players play the game, this seems an impossible task. For some, it means they are geared in the first few days of a season, for others, it takes weeks.
If the eternal realm had the same advantages of seasonal content, then it wouldn’t matter what the drop rates were, you’d get there in the end. But I’m guessing the vast majority of players play in the seasonal realm, in order to get the season themes.
So how to fix this ?

Honestly, while annoying to run Duriel hundreds of times and feel lucky because 3 mythics dropped compared to what would likely have been a massive stack of mythics in the previous seasons… I think they made the right move. I actually felt excited to see that purple glow when it dropped. Mythic gears should cause that feeling when they drop imo. I’m a fairly casual player as I only have 2 or 3 days a week I can actually log in. Casualy might get lucky but shouldn’t expect to have access to the best of the best with minimal effort / time investment. (I include myself in that comment).
Solution should be not making prolonged item hunting the end game and putting fun activities to end game. I’m almost 60h in and still don’t have mythic that I actually need and still don’t know how far I’m to actually craft one.
All I know is so far I only get 4 random mythics that has no use to me and I have no lith for Tyrael’s Might only 2 eoms or whatever needed to craft shako… We did like 60+ Andariel and Duriel runs yesterday with 4 people and there was only 2 mythic drops between us. A guy was asking for lith runes and none of us get one…
An A-RPG end game or really any RGP end game is about min maxing your gear and taking on the toughest content. Going back as far as FF7, I have thousands of hours in multiple game saves where I was grinding for specific things to special items for the tougher bosses. Did the same thing for years when I played WoW not to mention every Diablo game released to date. If you are looking for monthly content and special events on a weekly reset, you want a mobile game.
For me, its almost like the genie is out of the bottle already.
In previous seasons, I broadly knew what options and items were out there for my favourite builds.
Now, I levelled my fire sorc all the way to 60 before even starting to get even low level aspects I could enchant onto my gear. Just made levelling less enjoyable.
Game still has enough min maxing in it with temperaments and critical masterworking. Which I don’t think I’ll ever get to perfect in a season.
Not all builds heavily depend on them but most do if you really want to push. That generally means pits and pushing for paragon 300 I suppose.
What most people ask is enough items with right affixes and aspects. Most people don’t ask for perfect rolled items at day one. But when you go though your inventory a hundred times without an upgrade, you just don’t want to look items over and over again. They may even make legendaries even more scarce but make it useful when it drops. I’m tired of stopping to clear my inventory over and over without finding a meaningful item.
Indeed. Out of 1 WT4 Tormented session of ~30 bosses I netted 8 mythics in the last couple weeks of the previous season.
This season: ~60 tormented kills on T4 = 0 mythics and barely any Ancestrals.
I’m 256 paragon, just 1 drop and no ancestral WTH is happening?.. I’m going to quit, so much effort for nothing, sad
