Does the in-game chat work?

Hi people. I was just wondering if the chat works. other than a whisper and local chat I couldn’t tell if the chat works. is there a video or how to use the chat? is there a general chat? if so how do you get to it and use it? please just call me an idiot if you want but make sure you explain it to me. I never see any sign of people talking in the game, what am i doing wrong or is it just quiet online?

Interesting post. I felt the same way, but didn’t really care enough to really think about it. But you are correct, and after reading what you typed, I’m curious as well. I had a couple of people respond to me, but all in all it seemed dead.

If I were to guess, I’d say people were one of the following:

  1. Not paying attention to chat.
  2. Not active in the area (I would mostly talk in the main city, and get no response. However, outside near Ashava I had a couple of conversations)

Whatever the case is, it seems that the “General” chat is a bit lacking and perhaps needs to be broadened a bit if they intend people to actually speak to one another in game. If not, I’m fine with that too. I don’t plan on using it much at all, tbh.

as of right now it seems to work only inside your instance. that means you and 11 others can talk with each other. So not really a good tool if you want to group up.

If it stays that way, you better join a d4 discord for grouping and talking.

The only good reason for it i can come up with, is to prevent bots to spam the chats.

The problem is that the game forces you to play in cross-platform mode to have access to chat features… but what do consoles lack?? a keyboard. So if you disable CP to only run with other PC gamers, then you cant chat. If you leave CP on so you can chat, then you run into lots of people who cant chat. Gee, thats a fun one!

There is also voice chat, which I signed into one time, but the other person in party wasn’t using it.

I did get several people to talk to me using the global chat (aka trade channel, chat limitations/entries within a short amount of time)

wait… if i disable cross platform on PC, i can’t chat on PC? are you sure that’s how that works? seems odd.

but when i played i used trade (dont know who it connects to) to ask questions and screw around, rarely did people type…

if you join a clan, the experience is a bit better, but every clan i joined, seemed to be filled with people who don’t pay attention, afk and overall joined clans for no reason

i thought the point of a clan was to communicate, if you just want to solo, dont join them

but oh well, maybe it’ll be better on release

it didn’t seem like chat worked except during the world boss for me.

Set aside of the local chat and the whisper, you had the group chat and clan chat (available as long as you grouped with at least another player / joined a clan), but also a trading channel.

Often when you talk and don’t get an answer (set aside of console players not being able to type text due to lack of keyboard… unless if some consoles allow USB or bluetooth keyboards?), it was because the players were either AFK or busy fighting…

In order to talk to different chat channels (local / group / trading / clan), you either had to use the TAB keyboard key or click on the any of the little tabs just above the chat window.

Yes it works. I used it.

yep, at least in the previous beta

i disabled CP and was forced out of chat entirely, also barring clan functions too

Thank God someone asked this. I was about to ask for some info, if anyone figured it out. During betas I was not able to communicate with anyone. I didnt see anyone chatting and when I tried it stayed blank. If we cant communicate with the zone of players how we going to form groups as well as raid.

The thing I noticed, is in the very first beta test for people who preordered the game, there was a lot of chat in town. But every test after there was almost no talking.
I summed it up to everyone was busy checking out the game and that chat will be used more on release.

I don’t know. Only time I used chat outside of clan/friends chat was at the WB.

It works but as far as I could tell there’s no way to filter just player chat and it’s mixed in with all the emote spam, npc chatter, etc.

I didn’t see anyone using chat until waiting for the world boss to spawn last beta.

This needs to be looked at by Blizzard immediately.

  1. Enable chat regardless of cross-platform or not.
  2. Add a global and trade chat channel.

There already is a trade chat channel, lol.

Yeah it should work, you can talk to local chat and if someone is close to you, they can see it. It worked for me day one.

Give us full chat. how does one make friends in this game if you can’t chat to meet people.

You have to use trade chat, which is off by default, to attempt community interactions, as the developers did not see fit to provide ANY communication tools in game.
