Does Attack speed apply to channeled abilities?
Bump, also, are channeled abilities treated as DOTs?
Attack speed controls how often a skill fires and how much damage is done per tick on channeled skills, so yes it applies.
No, they are direct damage. DOTs are something on the creature/terrain which deals damage even if the player is doing nothing.
It should, however at least on Storm Lightning, there is no increase to the speed of lightning strikes, so the question would be if it benefits in some other way, or if this was an oversight.
So no one is sure? Some say yes, some say no
WW, a channeled skill, sees no benefit from attack speed afaik. At least, it saw no benefit from the accelerating aspect while I was trying it out.
I just did a quick test of Lightning Storm specifically. Here is what I found:
While holding down the lightning storm button, the speed at which bolts come down appeared to be twice my attack speed.
When pressing the lightning storm button repeatedly, the speed at which bolts come down appeared to be fixed at around 2.8 aps, regardless of my attack speed. (The number 2.8 is not exact, my timing methods were crude. But it did seem to be the same regardless of attack speed. My testing method was just to click my mouse as fast as I could; it may be possible that there are timing issues involved, and that you could get faster aps with precise timing.)
For building lightning storm, this means I would ignore attack speed on gear/paragon. During combat, charge to the level you want and then spam click.
That’s curious because I noticed for sure 100% obvious that the Weapon Speed does very significantly change the rate that channeling attacks happen. Would it make sense that weapon speed affects it but attack speed does not?
Attack speed does directly affect the channeling portion of lightning storm, i.e. when you hold the lightning storm button down. As you said, it’s very noticeable when playing 1h vs 2h. My testing seemed to indicate that channeling speed equals twice attack speed (including attack speed modifiers).
However, if you repeatedly press the button, it seems to use an internal cooldown of ~0.35s which is independent of attack speed. I tested this with using a both a 1h and a 2h, and for each of these I did a separate trial with additional attack speed and without it.
(For quality of life purposes I would always choose 1h instead of 2h, because channeling is a pain with 2h and in practice you have to do it a lot.)
Also want to know if stack effects are applied at start or end of channeled skills.
Example, Decompose is a Shadow skill that adds a stack to Shadowblight for Necromancer.
Does that stack get applied the moment I start channeling Decompose, or only after each 1-second tick has passed?
Do you see a benefit between 2H and 1H + 1H ? Cause for druids we are seeing major difference
I tried Channeling Decompose (Necro) with a +25 basic attack speed ring on a test dummy and didn’t notice any change at all. I just pressed and held, I didn’t try to rapid click or anything.
Attack speed makes channel skills tick faster which makes you lose resource faster.
