Does anyone like tempering?

I was really liking this game until… I started getting into tempering. I would finally find an item with good base stats go to temper and never get the affix I needed. ok finally find a new item again with great base stats oh i really wanted this one go to temper and again crap! I suddenly hate the game and immediately want to quit. Is this someone’s idea of fun? well its not! I would not mind paying more with each try but a capped limit of 5 tries? common on!!!

No one likes the mechanic that plays the game.

However, there are many sadists that enjoy watching the frustration of gamers interacting with tempering.

For the most part I’m fine with it.

The only thing I find more annoying is the constant clicking. That includes master working AND Enchanting (which I think is far worst).

would you be in favor of changing the mechanic for a higher cost of tempering past 5 tries instead of a hard cap?

Not a bad idea actually.

However, in this case… I’m open minded enough and enjoy the game enough to deal with tempering and it’s mechanics. To me wanting/hoping/dreaming/Wishing for change when the chances are it’s not gonna happen is a 100% total waste to me.

If I don’t have to deal/mess with the mechanic I wont, and if the whole premise of playing diablo 4 revolves around something I don’t like then I Won’t Play The Game.

shrugs For me I find it simple. I don’t like something, I don’t play. I play what I enjoy.
I brick items…just gives me more of a reason to play/chase that item again. Trade for it, may talk to people and be friends with them because of it.

I’m grateful to be the kind of gamer that can go with the flow, or have the common sense to not play something I don’t enjoy… Period.

I managed to get the affixes I want with max values on the first try on two of my 2GA weapons. Was breathing a sign of relief. I had bricked some 3GA gears with wrong affixes before.

I won’t mind, at the last try, to be given a chance to select the affixes that I want but with a lower value. At least not all is wasted and I can still use the gear until I get better luck.

I accept bricking item in a game.

It give me the motivation to find better gear.

No, I haven’t brick any item since we have the scroll, because Im not greedy.

I think this is the case for most people that don’t chase the perfect affix every time. I have bricked a few items, but only when I’m trying for a higher %

Only time I brick is when trying to improve that 1 to a 2 or that 10.5% to a 15% but I’m well aware of the risk. I know that’s not always the case (rng gets us all in this game) but it’s very rare not being able to hit once on 2 different things with the amount of tries they give you.

That being said being able to use 2 scrolls on an item instead of 1, or the option to keep the current affix (like it does at the occultist) would be a welcome change.

Tempering is not that bad if you’re trying to get a build online or if you’re trying for the odd upgrade.

But if you’re really trying to min/max it becomes a merciless rng wall to progression.

The system is a slight annoyance at best and infuriating beyond a certain progression point.

And masterworking is a chore. Hundreds, or even thousands of clicks.

The system in its current state is awful. The idea has potential but the execution is bad. Any mechanic in a game that intentionally makes a player feel bad for doing it is the wrong way to execute it. It should be something a player looks forward to not dreads.

I wont object to that, but Im against the need to dumb down the few challenges left in the game.

D4 is casual enough, we don’t want it to take the D3 or hellokitty route.

Tempering is crap, but luckily they mentioned that for season 10 there will be massive improvements no ?.. They didn’t ? oh damn… Another 4 months of shi-t Tempering and MW !?

I agree. I’m tired of clicking. It’s probably easier on a controller then a keyboard I would think… Still annoying though.

100% Slot Machine Mechanic. :joy:

Gain [2-3] additional maximum stacks on buffs and passives
Gain [2-4] additional stacks on Aspects equipped

NOTE: All manuals have an attempt-number attached to them (anywhere between 6 and 10 notably)

So personally I’d be pleased/hyped to find the right manual I need in the bunch (if the mechanic worked like that), and I’d know that “everyone’s trash might be someone else’s gold” principle works (at least to a point) for the game

That’s why I think the concept itself is decent, pretty good actually, but I don’t like the current implementation of it… :person_shrugging:

Tempering is fun on items that don’t mean much like non-ancestral items that are easily replaceable. It is not fun when you find a perfect or almost perfect item for a build you are using. Then it becomes a point of high stress/frustration hoping that this item that probably took forever to find isn’t instantly turned to trash in a few clicks.

Crafting in D4 is just fundamentally bad, was happy to hear Rhykker echo my sentiments a while back;

Deterministic systems shouldn’t be random.

The Blacksmiths Union has come out strongly in support of tempering. They feel that their members should be entitled to constantly give you things that are not what you paid for and more importantly they should be able to keep your gold and ask you for more to fix it. Lastly if they get bored of trying and failing to fix it they can tell you to jog on and that they don’t feel like trying any more.

These rights are essential to maintaining a strong blacksmith community in Sanctuary. Otherwise they will be reduced to making horseshoes and nails!

I hate it. Full Stop. I tolerate it because it’s one really bad thing about a generally decent game.
