Do any of you play for the story, immersion and fun or is it just me?

I know I’m an out liner, I don’t care about grinding paragon levels, gear or theory craft/class/“best builds” ect. Or unlocking world boss cosmetics or streaming, ect.

Instead I’ll be playing D4 to experience the story, immerse myself in its world and have some button mashing ARPG fun killing all sorts of nasties!

As I’ve gotten older, my times become precious (in my late 30’s and time seems to move faster as you get older) and I tend to want to focus on unique experiences and well told stories, worlds I can immersive myself in before completing it, moving onto my next adventure.

The endless loop of games like LoL, Fortnite and all those top streaming games just hold no appeal to me - I need an end to my game. Although the gameplay must be enjoyable too! Hence why I’m looking forward to some good old fashion button mashing, visual feasts across its gory aesthetics.

This is very much the case for Diablo 4 and me. I loved what I experienced in the beta and with my history with Diablo (reading the books, installing Diablo 1 on win95 when I was like 12) I want immerse myself again in that world and with a 35+hr campaign, I’m totally sold!

So yes, I know I’m a minority, but I’m curious if I’m truly the only one of few people at the same time. Will any of you also be playing just to experience the story, the lore/visual immersion and have some basic arpg mashing fun?

Than possibly after maybe a replay with another class, move onto the next game in your library until more story content drops? I’m not saying this won’t mean hundreds of hours played though.

I wouldn’t say that. I do enjoy theory-crafting and what-not … but I also enjoy a good story. The more I have been thinking about it … I may just take much more time looking the whole place over. Yes, I want ALL the Lilith Shrines … but I also like the atmosphere of the game as well.

You are not alone.

This is Diablo 4 … whole lotta stuff to see … :beverage_box: :rage: :crossed_swords: :dragon: :ghost: :skull: :imp:

I play the first run through for the story, but I will change to grind/farming after that. So yes I do play for the story, but once I feel like explored it, then change into the core gameplay loop. Because I know others that play it I might end up playing a bit with them in between, the solo play where I go through the story the first time and try out my class will be slow. I might play faster then you, but I also enjoy the the story.

I always played games for immersion and how it makes me feel. Though I’m the minority, I think most Diablo fans play for the gameplay.

All games I buy is for the immersion, music, and feelings evoked.

  • Zelda
  • re4
  • Jedi survivor
  • Elden ring
  • you name it

It’s all about immersion and how I will play d4.
Also why I’m not so crazy about the multiplayer component.

But immersion is excellent in d4.
The soundtrack for the fractured peaks is incredible. The art design top notch.

I play for all of the above but I’m a bit of an outlier among my friends. Many have never given a crap about the story in a game in their lives, especially in these sorts of games that tend to be a bit thin. Funny thing is, I personally think the Blizz writing team is, in general, a campy, unserious travesty, but I’ve been hooked on Diablo since '97, no stopping now. :joy:

I play for fun. I never got this immersion thi g. Ive never gotten lost in a game or anything like that. I am always keenly aware I am aying a game. But like other nin vidoe games or sports, having fun withing the particular set of rules laid out for me is just fun and engaging.

Have I ever played a game for story. Nope. If the story is good, it’s a bonus. Give me good gameplay and I’m hooked. In the end, they are just fun diversions distracting me from the ever quickening days as I get older. I just hope I have my mental and physical facalties as I become elderly to continue enjoying them.

Im all in on the story - the lore of the Diablo series is what drives me. I remember watching the act 3 D2 video of diablo going through the portal and was blown away. Hoping for more cut scene greatness in D4 …

I play all the parts of the game, but I take my time doing it because I like enjoying the game. Does that count?

I even play with a bunch of friends and I told all of them that I am not grouping until I am done with the campaign haha. I like to go at my own pace, watch all the cutscenes, read all the text, etc. I aint getting rushed through nothin.

I like to play through the story once and then never again.

I love getting immersed in the atmosphere and combat of the game.

I find some of the character building to be part of the fun of the game like putting a puzzle together, but not in a meta chasing kind of way… I go for what I personally enjoy not just speedclearing.

I’m a huge grinder; I played 400 hours of No Man’s Sky just to min max… which is insane in the eyes of most of the player base. That being said, I am going to enjoy every cinematic/story dialog, and rush through the mobs outside of that. I figure I’ll only get the experience once, and then the grinding will be there for me after the fact.

Yes, just you.
There are millions of people expected to buy and play this game, yet you’re the odd one. The one and only who plays the game for the story, immersion and fun.

The FIRST time I play through the game I do.

Afterward - BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, GIMME LOOT.

I could absolutely careless about story. Not one game I played that I know the story,. Same with music. I don’t listen to the words it’s all about the sound and beat.

It annoys me if you are to say do this mission that you need to kill boss but you also need to find this key not knowing that you need this key because you didn’t read or listen to your contact and which doesn’t say to find key in the mission title I get so mad because I don’t know what I’m missing. Sure it’s my fault but I don’t care what the contact has to say besides “kill frog and bring him back to me” that all the contact (IMO) should say and the mission title.
Get to the point FFS.

Every cut screen I can skip I do and I don’t read the contacts either. Put a marker on the map and let’s go!!!

its more fun to watch all at once when someone uploads it all put together. So best to skip the cut scenes to avoid spoilers until someone uploads it all in one big youtube vid

Anyone who doesn’t play the game for those reasons is objectively playing wrong.

First playthrough I am doing it like that, soaking in everything… after that it will be “skip cutscene” mode. :beers:

I wasn’t captivated by the storytelling and started skipping all dialogues soon after the start, but. While waiting for the full release I started missing playing D4 and found several hours long no commentary playthroughs where people didn’t skip anything. I played these videos in background listening to the dialogues. I thought they were pretty interesting. So I will be listening to everything on release.
