Is there a way to access expert and penitent without the expansion or is this another hidden paywall?
When you hover over those levels, it tells you on screen what the requirement is.
If this is a seasonal character go and log into one of your most progressed eternal characters and then log back into seasonal. All difficulties up to penitent should be unlocked then. T1 requires LV 60 + a pit 20 clear.

A bit stupid that you need a work around though.
It is stated in the patch notes that penitent is unlocked for LV 1 characters only after a character has completed the base campaign. As no newly minted seasonal character for season 6 would meet that criteria, a player must log into an eternal realm character in order for that to unlock. You only need to do this once. Once done, it will remain “learned” for good as base campaign completion is a permanently set flag. You needed to do this at least once if you did not complete the campaign on your first seasonal character due to the change in difficulty modes.
You can actually just go to the statue and change it after character creation also.

I thought Penitent was supposed to be difficult.
Only if you’ve logged onto a character with the base campaign completed first. Otherwise, no, you can’t.

I did it on my first character and did not log onto anything else. I made the switch at lvl 10 though.
I just made a new one and I did it again at lvl1.
I have not logged into any of my Eternal Characters since before the server shut down S5 yesterday.
Unless you meant Brand New players without older characters can’t do this…then maybe. But like I said I just logged in after the patch and made a new character, no logging onto anything else.

Yeah, I will have to. It’s just that ppls kept saying ermahgawd so herd lol.
It is hard on a lower level new character.
I think if you are at 50 and have some tempering it is probably easier.
There is even a note saying if you have legendaries and tempering then Peitent may be for you or something to that effect.
I tried doing the seasonal TP bus thing, at lvl 30 and it was pretty brutal, I died a bunch of times.
