Did you guys see the unwarranted and ignorant nerf to Burning Instinct Paragon node in the S5 PTR patch notes?

Burning Instinct

  • Burning Instinct Critical Strike bonus reduced from 1% per 25 Intelligence to 1% per 50 Intelligence and now caps at 40%|x|.

In the first place they think that node is a buff to critical strike. That is just plain ignorant.

And more importantly there is zero reason to nerf that node’s buff to burning damage in % / int or capping it at 40%.

It’s stuff like this that really makes me wonder if anyone at Blizz even understands the sorcerer class.

The large burning damage bonus is there precisely because DOT-based burning damage from Firewall and Incinerate can’t crit.

The nerf is bad enough but saying that the node has a critical strike bonus really takes the cake.

Summary

It isn’t exactly a nerf.
Sorc hit 2000 int easily so you can get the full bonus which will be 40%, that is 1/3 increase from previous bonus.

In general they are updating all the game systems.
Season 4 was the items.
Season 5 is going to be the Uniques.
They already hinted following that will be Sorc and Druid class mechanics as Necromancer book of the dead got updated.
I think the Paragon board is going to be updated as part of Season 6, Vessel of Hatred launch.

In short the 1/3 increase to the Legendary node is short time fix to buff burning builds.
Clearly the use of critical damage prevent us from double dip as one of the Cold Legendary nodes ( I don’t remember which one) that is base on the % of your cold damage you get extra vulnerable damage.

My Incinerate build is getting x120% multiplicative from that node currently. How can you even think that capping it at 40% is not exactly a nerf?

All I see is buffs to skills that were and will remain trash, and nerfs to what we are forced to use anyway.

  • RIP survivability again with flame shield and ice shield nerfs
  • teleport cooldown nerf xdd
  • They are coping way too hard with crackling energy as a damage source. It’s such a meme at this point it’s not even funny
  • can’t wait for the next poe league :gladge:

The fact that they have a LEAD CLASS DESIGNER and this stuff gets through is baffling.

Blizzard introduced caps on all these nodes in other paragon boards as well.
What Blizzard needs to do is get rid of the critical strike damage is damage source and replace it with something else that will be useful.

They did buffed incinerate little bit:

Combustion
Base Burning damage increased from 20% to 40%.

Elemental Control - Utility
+X Skill ranks to Crippling Flames.

Not sure how useful is this one, it does grant source for crowd controlling enemies but you have to waste tempering to get it.

Aspect of Engulfing Flames
Burning damage to enemies below 50% Life increased from 15-30% to 30-45%.

What we don’t know yet, what will be the final form of Incinerate unique. That is another source of buff possible as well.

This is not good, in any way. My BI is at 128x, why they hate us.

i’m tired of playing crappy D3 wizard, i won’t D2 sorc, not this lame design. Nothing will save it.

Well, they are doubling the base value of Combustion to 40%. That’s at least sensible. They also upped the Burn damage on Summoned Hydra so I think they’re really angling to push us into finding those extra “unique sources of burning” :stuck_out_tongue:

Meanwhile, the Necro minion builds that are stacking golem damage to one shot bosses, have their Hulking Monstrosity paragon node at x100% golem damage. And there are no requirements to stack anything for that one–it’s just x100% for taking the node.

I’d be OK with a “cap” like that for burning damage, even if we have to stack crit damage and int to get it.

40% cap to BI is a joke.

I agree totally! My BI node on my current endgame incinerate build is at 145% so I’ll end up loosing 105% when this goes live! How do they think that’s ok to do?? Incinerate is already not strong enough to really push endgame anywhere near as good as other builds. Even the super high end pit pushing flameweaver build isn’t really killing things with burn damage, they have to use the extra multiplier from shatter and have a bunch of adds on bosses to make burn work. I feel like this needs to stay uncapped. Especially when you see that we’ve taken a substantial hit to our defense. I don’t use immortal builds right now and it’s tough out there. Having a longer cooldown on FS, and teleport, then less scaling on Ice Armor, is going to make survival next season a miracle.

Given critical strike damage is useless to burning builds, and 40% doesn’t offer a bonus.
Doesn’t it render the legendary node useless?

Unless I miss something, and critical strike damage has other uses.

No use whatsoever for skills that can’t crit, like firewall or incinerate. It’s only the convoluted BI formula that makes some modest stacking of CS damage useful for burning builds.

It actually has always been a weird way to give us multiplicative burning damage. It forces a stat on us that doesn’t help those builds in any other way other than some minor inciddental crits from other skills we might use that can crit.

They even nerfed the garbage we didn’t use like Ceaseless Conduit.

You have no clue what you are talking about.

Burning Instinct doesn’t scale off Int, and Sorcs can, by painstakingly stacking Crit Dmg (which does nothing for Incinerate), get the Burning Instinct bonus to around 120%x to 140%x or so.

The nerf caps it at 40%x damage, meaning you lose around 80%x to 100%x or more damage.

Burning Instinct is the one board / node that sorc can scale over 100%[ x ] and takes helluva of nodes to reach that legendary node.

now its been nerfed to needing 100% more Int points, can capped at 40%[ x ]?

… this make Incinerate Sorc Build is dead as well.

  1. ball lightning nerfted almost -90%
  2. frozen orb winterglass nerfed about -50%
  3. blizzard ice spiked no longer do damage is -100%
  4. flameweaver firebolt build is 100% dead due to flameshield nerf.
  5. frosty stride teleport evade build get nerfed and no fun anymore.
  6. Incinerate Flamethrower is dead as Burning Instinct nerfed -100% & capped.

whenever sorc youtubers recommends a good build and fun way to play sorc, Blizzard Inc sure will hammered sorcerer class down as like a nail that sticks out.

The problem with the node is that it doesn’t double dip, they need to get rid of the critical strike and replace it by something useful like Frigid Fate, it scales of your cold damage and grants you X% more vulnerable damage.

Since Sorc has access to plenty off non-physical damage not only Cold Sorc can benefit from it.

Edit: To me the problem isn’t the cap rather the useless stat that is required to benefit from the node. It is a dumb oversight from Blizzard when they capped all the Legendary nodes.

Yes you’re right, accumulating critical if I don’t perform critical is a stupid mechanic. If I’m a fire mage I must accumulate fire damage to have synergy. The nodes should be x% of your fire damage with a limit of 40% and x15% critical.
