Gold is the only relative form of currency right now for trading. Boss mats are too abundant. Gold needs to remain a highly sought after commodity to maintain a trade economy.

Besides, there is plenty of ways to “farm” gold. Literally 1 tree of whispers turn-in on WT4, gets you 10-13+ million gold.

Not to mention you can just pick up and vendor all yellows for gold. You don’t need them for salvage, legendaries give more than enough veiled crystals, and yellow gear is dog for affixes.

Uniques sell for heaps of gold, which you will be salvaging and vendoring tons of in end-game. Tree of Whispers is massive gold.
