Did player retention increase in S8?

D4 leveling journey is nothing to wrote home about. Even the devs have clearly communicated that to us in less of a plain words but rather, they said some along the lines where they want players to get to max level fast so they can really start to experience the meat and juicy part of the end game - The focus.

Now, I am not disagreeing with what the devs are saying. IN fact I agree with them. Leveling journey in D4 really does not mean much and I am fine with that. The heavy grind and your build does not come online until you are well past max level.

This is how this game is designed from the ground up.

Ohh forgot OF are for fanbois only.

Some of us paying customers follow the progress of the game hoping it improves so we can get what we paid for

New players are not “retention”. This faster decline is your indication of retention. Every season sees high numbers at the start and they slowly drop off with time. This is normal for seasonal content.

Seeing as the drop off is faster in S8 than S7 is a failure in player retention, period. They made specific changes to drag out progression and slow the seasonal decline and they obviously failed. Nothing new, nothing original, nothing creative and the same lame delay tactics lead to this. It was actually quite predictable to those who pay attention.

As S9 is more of the same and is doubling down on the changes that failed retention in S8 I expect the S9 drop off to be faster. Won’t be long until we find out.

You are making a statement without proof. You act as if he is clearly wrong and most of the player base doesn’t want the changes.
How about you speak for yourself and not an imaginary majourity?
All my friends, nephew and me were of the opinion S7 was the worst season minus witch gems.
All I see is the same people creating the same threads here and on reddit. They’re mostly current or former D3 players who intend to make D4 a hot potato garbage just like D3.

Now, dont you think thats asked a little much on here?

Clearly my opinion must represent the majority! That gives every post so much more weight

Lets also not forget, that while we have armchair developers here, we also have armchair analysts. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

In my clan of about 100 we definitely had a decrease and faster than we’ve ever had before. 2 of my officers outright quit the game, and the vast majority of clan members gave up without finishing the season journey.

As far as I’m concerned, this season has been an abject failure. I don’t say that to be pedantic, but I love community building and the direction they’re taking is killing that. Not to mention it’s down right boring af.

If it weren’t for the fact that this is the only game my husband and I play together, I’d have abandoned it already. They’re quite literally killing this game and I can’t fathom why.

Talk about making statements without proof. Time to look in the mirror and get over whatever it is you don’t like about D3.

It makes more sense when you view it as a marketing and sales tool like D4 leadership does rather than a game. It is not about the product itself but a means to make a sale. In their minds all they need to do is get you to log in long enough to make the sale and they use every cheap scummy tactic in the books to make it happen. Every time one of them speaks it reminds me of the old Joe Isuzu commercials a few decades ago.

Until this attitude changes nothing else in the game will…except for the occasional highly requested battlepass change.

Then play D3, why bother making D4 into D3. I heard the season began over there.
D4 isn’t D1 - D3. For mobile blasters, diablo immortal already exists.

Best theory I’ve seen so far is they’re taking away to give something back at expansion.

Running with that, there’s perhaps some license being taken along the way with s9 skill reworks… while the tables being reset somewhat. Reserving a view to see how it lands in season, to be fair. Theres a potentially positive take to be had with this one as well… see how it goes.

You are making a pretty big leap that any one here has that power to change d3 into d4.

That’s clearly on the developers. If they believe d3 systems are better than d4’s systems, in terms of fun, playability and making money that says a lot about d4 now doesn’t it? Also gives a lot of compliments to d3.

Lol - they were so far down the development path for S9 that had to like the direction, it was far too late to change the path of slowing us down that’s why we had the hard sell in the campfire chat - s8 was worst yet, s9 looks worse.

But we won’t find out. It’s going to be like every season where someone claims it is a failure, and then BDF says “if you don’t like it play something else”, and Blizzard themselves stay silent till the next campfire for the next PTR.

The reality is even if things start to slide or already started sliding downhill, Blizzard will never say anything as it can impact sales in the store currently. They would prefer those kept going so will avoid commenting on the season.

Correct we wont, and it will be like every season where the person disliking the season will come on here and voice it, which is perfectly normal and fine mind you…

And then, there will be some echos heard bouncing around the thread, to make it seems like that is the majority talking…

No one knows who is representing the majority.

It is very likely that someone making certain thread about certain issue indeed does represent the majority - we just have no way of knowing it.

Only blizzard would know…

short answer: no, it only increased number of players abandoning the season much sooner than later.

my entire friendlist is playing Immortal.

Considering they added a handful of new bosses including a higher tier of boss being big Belial one would think player retention would have been higher. Was it? Season 7 and 8 I leveled a lot with the seasonal activity. Once you get all the powers there wasn’t really incentive to do the activity anymore. Season 7 it was reasonable to return to witchtides.

I reached a point in season 8 where maxing out the pit for glyphs was the only reason to get stronger or hope for better drops. I decided to pass on that. Personally I believe season 8 failed to keep higher player retention. Unless someone has actual statistics to show otherwise.
