I’d argue there’s still a long way to go. Even with all the areas, the story itself feels like act I and II of Diablo 3. For 90$, it’s just too short, and it feels like we’re completely adjacent to the story. Like we were there… we witnessed it… now what?
They REALLY need to fix that apathy. PoE, Last Epoch, Grim Dawn, even Diablo 3 don’t have that “now what” feeling. Hell, the last half of the story in Path of Exile EXCLUSIVELY happens in Maps(equivelent to nightmare dungeons). Think the War of the Atlas, the Temple of Atzeotl, The Elder, The Shaper, The Eater of Worlds, The Searing Exarch and The Maven. That all happens AFTER you “beat the game”.
I was a member of the beta, and I was one of many who migrated to Steam when the client came to it in 2015. When I put my first review, I praised it for what it did right that Diablo 3 flubbed, but I also called it out on the lag and disconnects. In 2018 they included the “lockstep” communication mode to help stop lag kills. It still happens, but effectivly the server will try and predict the next 1 second of action in case of disconnect, which helped immensly on my 2018 internet. When they fixed it, I updated my review.
Path of Exile is what Diablo 3 Should have been. This game is faithful to Diablo 1 and 2s playstyle, while kicking it up a notch. Skills are now aquired through gems, a massive berks tree enables truly unique builds, and a well done story as well. Add to that that this is one of the truly free-to-play games and is the perfect example of FTP done right, this game is an amazing accomplishment.
There’s something for everyone - races for power players, seasons that add new and exciting challenges, PVP, you name it.
If this game had one weakness, I’d have to say it’s the trade system. There’s no real built-in way for handling trades well, which can lead to a tonne of problems. Most people who play are very nice, but expect to get fleeced every once in a while.
The currency system is very unique and something that I quite like, but it’s a steep learning curve to figure out exactly what everything is worth, much less if you end up with something stupidly rare, like a Mirror. If you even want to begin in trade, I suggest lurking for a hour or two in chat just to see what the going offers are.
Overall a great game, and still in development.
Edit: Wow. I have actually played this game long enough that it would be 2 hours, every day, for a year. Time for some introspection.
(At that point, I was sitting at 1,451 hours)
I STILL think the trade system is PoE’s main weakness. When they change that, I’ll update my review.
