Diablo Hellfire Crash

i may or may not be in the correct place but if anybody can help me i would appreciate it. im trying to launch diablo hellfire and get a blank error message upon launching the game. i have tried to uninstall/reinstall, ive tried to repair files etc… and nothing is working. can anybody help?

Are you talking about the original Diablo and the Hellfire expansion?

Just tested mine, came up and played just fine. (I had to buy it to test it - lol)

I don’t see a lot of setting options either for it.

It may be having an issue with the video settings for your system. Can you provide some details on your setup?

yes the original diablo hellfire, its on xbox pc game pass now. i get a blank error message. what type of details do you want to know? idk how to post screen shots here

Details like what kind of computer you are running it on. CPU, GPU, memory amount, windows version, etc.

Does the game try to load at all? Any video, any sound, etc?

Mine was purchased through the battlenet app.

i am 7950x3d cpu 4090 gigabyte oc gpu windows 11 64 gb ram plus about 8tb of storage. when i go to launch the game it goes like its gonna play but it comes right back out with a blank error message, but i cant see what the message says cause the monitor message comes back on over top of it. i have it in both xbox and battle.net

Monitor message?

You mean the monitor does an on screen display over the error? Can you not wait out the OSD of the monitor message to go away for it to reveal the error?

Can you try playing to a different monitor? Are you trying to play on an ultra wide or 4k?

I guess I’m confused there a bit.

You have the game in both places, or you have the same problem in both places?

Sounds like some sort of accept or agreement screen, but I didn’t get that when I tried to run it today. It simply started up and loaded. And I literally bought the game (10 bucks) right from the battlenet app today, within 5 minutes of reading your original post. Please note, I also have bought it on GoG, and have the original game from 1996. lol

I have the game. I am on an ultra wide. By the time I wait for the monitor display to go away the message is gone, all I know is it looks like a blank error message

This might be an issue. But without a way to collaborate, I can’t say for sure. Any chance you have a normal aspect monitor?

I run a curved 1440 display, but its not an ultra wide.

Its either that, or try forcing the monitor to a lower normal aspect resolution as a test. (such as 1920x1080)

It could also be a refresh problem. Try setting the monitor to a lower refresh to see if that helps.

Make sure you have GPU Scheduling enabled in Windows.

Then try to run the game.

I notice with mine, it doesn’t allow for a Windowed mode. So it may be the monitor you are using won’t support the game so it gives an error. (I tried using the -windowed command but no joy)

So my monitor is 1440 curved display as well but it may be ultra wide. How do I check GPU scheduling in windows? I had Diablo hellfire running on my pc before but not from battle.net. And everything was fine. I believe the issue may be a result of having the game on my pc prior to now. Can you please open registry editor and check gateway settings? I need those. It will be under Diablo>battle.net>configuration

It either is, or it isn’t. You don’t know? Ultra wide monitors are exactly that. Extra wide. Resolution of a standard 1440p display is 2560x1440. If its an ultra wide, it will be 3440x1440.

Curved has little to do with it. I also tested it on my laptop. Now it was a bit funky. I started it, but had a black screen. I alt-tabbed out and back in, then it popped up. I had to do the same thing when I exited the game. So that was strange.

I tried searching for that in the registry editor, and while I found tons of things Diablo related, nothing like what you described. Can you name out the entire key its under? From the beginning to the point of data you are referencing? Should start with something like HKEY_USERS or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or similar.

Sounds like you are trying to associate your issue with a connection problem. Not sure this is a connection problem.

However.

Where did you get it before? Galaxy of Games? (GoG). That is where I got mine previously.

i got mine at internet archive. so it should be hkey_current_user>software>battle.net>configuration>d1>configuration, then modify battle.net gateway and tell me the gateway port

All it has for a value under edit is:

2000
01
connect-forever.classic.blizzard.com
8
Global

But all of that is listed in a line on that entry.

okay i had the same thing and i tried to run the game again but no luck

*shrug

I have no idea. Obviously it doesn’t like something about your system.

Runs fine on my desktop.
Runs glitcny on my laptop. (I have to alt-tab to get in and get out)
Haven’t tested it on anything else yet.

Might not like some windows or graphic settings, driver version, etc.

yea thats strange, it must be the game because i dont have issues with any other games. is it possible i can reach out to blizzard for help? because theres really no place for this on forums and i need professional help, but they told me to come here.

If they sent you here, they probably don’t have any official support for it.

All I can tell you is to experiment with system settings, to see if anything resolves it. You are running a nearly 30 year old game that has been modified to run on modern systems. There are bound to be issues in some cases.

Even the GoG version was buggy at times.

right. the only thing i can say is maybe somebody will see this post and have an answer, idk

From wikipedia

Hellfire is not playable on Blizzard’s online gaming service Battle.net

Furthermore, Hellfire requires the Diablo game. Again from wikipedia:

Hellfire was released digitally by Blizzard Entertainment on June 5, 2019 as a free add-on with every purchase of the original Diablo

The game is totaly playable in Win11, i don’t have any issues playing it on Win11 on a old HP Z230…
