So… the storyteller behind Diablo IV . narrative designer Eleni Rivera . has officially left the team. And honestly? That’s the most meaningful plot twist this game’s had in a long time.
Let’s not pretend here , the main story of Diablo IV was already shaky, but Vessel of Hatred turned into straight-up fanfiction tier. We went from battling Prime Evils to… a one-armed girl babysitting Mephisto’s soulstone like it’s her emotional support pet. That’s not dark fantasy, that’s bad Saturday morning cartoon writing.
Diablo used to be about despair, corruption, and humanity caught between Heaven and Hell. Now? It’s:
“Trauma bonding adventures with Neyrelle and her magical rock.”
“Villains who monologue like Disney rejects.”
“Lore that feels like it was pieced together from cut Netflix scripts.”
So yeah — seeing the person in charge of that narrative walk out is probably the best plot twist Blizzard has delivered since launch. Maybe next time, we’ll actually get a writer who understands Diablo isn’t supposed to feel like a YA novel with demons sprinkled on top.
It’s never just one person’s decision so there is no reason for witchhunt but I have to admit that the VOH storyline felt very out of place. I don’t have anything against strong, independent female characters, but having a one-handed girl carry the Stone of Mephisto—combined with the fact that nothing truly significant happened in the expansion’s story—was a major letdown for the series.
I’ve thought all along that the campaign story for both the base game & VoH is, at best, lackluster. I won’t put it all on this person; I’m sure there are many reasons for this issue.
It’s difficult to make suggestions for improvements, without at least implying there is something you dislike & feel needs improvement. So now I’m wondering: is there a continuum of complaint, here? May I post disgruntlement so long as I don’t take it “too far?” Or am I only supposed to post rainbows & kittens?
Note that most of the people on my Ignore list are the ones I feel are the “worst” of the complainers; very few of them are what would be normally referred to as “white knights” or “Blizzard shills.”
Name me 1 game that is perfect.
Is it subjective?
Do people have options?
Will this game cater to every one?
Or can we accept the game for what it is?
Some complaints are legitimate of course, and constructive Criticism is welcome for anything now a days.
To the subject at hand, I don’t see how the narrator has anything to do with the state of the game itself.
Name me 1 game that is perfect. Final Fantasy VI
Is it subjective? Absolutely not
Do people have options? wtf does that mean?
Will this game cater to every one? Absolutely
The state of the game is not the subject at hand - you steered it in that direction. OP expressed his opinion about the main story campaigns of D4 and VoH only.
