I have been suffering with this steamdeck screen reader hell issue same as you all since (almost) the beginning of the expansion release. I had One Good Session, and then it was screen reader hell.
I have tried turning off all Screen Reader/Voice Narration/Text To Speech options and even verified in settings text file that all of those options (including their volume) were = “0” / “0.00000”. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, moving from external drive to internal drive, changing to Proton Hotfix, Proton Experimental, going on Desktop mode. Literally nothing.
JUST now, I was narrating all of this out loud because it made no sense to me, and I realized I hadn’t actually tried on any of the GE Protons when I was listing off specific compatibility.
I booted it up on GE-Proton9-24 just because that just happened to be the first GE on my list and it actually booted without saying “Dee AHb Loh Eev”. It feels like an actual miracle. I’ve played the entire campaign through to endgame now on mute!!! (Unacceptable). On top of that, my performance has absolutely tanked because presumably TTS is trying to read everything happening at once. I minimized as much text as possible, but it’s hard. I would actually especially lag NOT in giant horde or dense action areas, but in MENUS. lmao. Crashing because I’m trying to sort my stash, as if that wasn’t painful enough already. Anyway.
So, try it I guess. In the game screen, go to Properties > Compatibility > [check] Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and choose GE-Proton (mine was 9-26, I haven’t tried other GEs). NOT Experimental, NOT Hotfix, those did not work for me.
If you don’t have a GE proton listed, hit Steam button > Power > Go to Desktop Mode
Open ProtonUp-Qt (you can search for it in the start menu, Steam button+X button to bring up the on screen keyboard)
Click Add Version
Choose: Compatibility tool - GE-Proton, Version - (your version of choice to install, I have 9-26, but also had 10-34, 9-23 and a few others already on hand for some other reasons)
Once they are installed, you should see them in the ProtonUp-Qt window under “Installed compatibility tools”.
Then once that’s done, just go back to gaming mode, apply the compatibility setting on Diablo IV before starting it, and HOPEFULLY it works for you too.
