Diablo 4 Runs on MacOS

Yesterday at Apple WWDC23 they introduced a bunch of new things, one of which is the new Game Porting Toolkit which is aimed at helping developers get their games running on MacOS.

The short version is that a developer can load up their game very quickly to get some insight into how well it’s going to run and how much effort might be required to tweak things.

In less than 24 hours users already have D4 running on MacOS.

If individual users can get this running on their own this quickly, there’s no reason Blizzard cannot provide an official MacOS release.

Summary of the new tool:

Blizzard really need to look at it from this perspective:
Yes there are fewer MacOS gamers than Windows PC gamers, however there are also fewer games.
For this reason, a new game release in the PC market is just another game to add to the million others, which every youtuber adds to their “list of games releasing this month” videos, but a new game release on MacOS is actually something pretty special which gets a lot more attention.

These new tools will definitely increase our selection of available games in the coming months, and if Blizzard can jump on the boat early they will expand their customer base before other developers can.

It’s really an easy win for everyone.

It runs great on the M1 Pro using this, and it would be awesome if Blizzard could support this natively on Mac. The tools are there, the people are there and it would be awesome to make sure that the Mac users of the world get to enjoy this great game

I have a shiny M1 Pro just waiting… WoW runs pretty well on it so I would love to add D4 to my list of Blizzard games!

I’m heartily behind a native OSX build of D4, as I’ve played the whole series on my Macs over the years.

It comes down to not only how much $ they would make by making a native app, but all of the hiring and support they would need to have in place to cover it. I’m sure to them, the reward does not justify the investment.

In the meantime, the Game Porting Kit works well, and I see this going one of two ways…either they don’t do/say anything, and let us play the game with the kit, or they lockdown the ability to do so with the next patch to squash this.

It’s 50-50 right now which way they will lean, I think. But a native port I’m not sure is in the cards anytime soon.

it’d be cool to see more games ported to macos and it may happen with the release of the game porting toolkit. its nice to see apple do a 180 and start to legitimately push for gaming on mac. here’s hoping developers take note and decide to give it a shot

i saw a video yesterday with several games. and mostly its fine.
only Horizon runs in slow motion.

but does support Blizzard to run Diablo 4 like this or can you get banned. bit risky imo.

Love how Blizzard sold me D4 on my Mac, then told me it doesn’t run on my Mac, but because there is a platform at there that does support the game, that it’s okay they sold it to me on the Mac. Which they no longer support.
