I had stopped playing for a while since I had maxed my seasonal character. I have started to play again, and found that ESC, TAB and / are the only keys that work. The other keys are bound in key bindings. I can’t look at inventory, mount or character information. I have re-installed Diablo 4 and Windows, trying to get back the use of letter keys. Furthermore, I have restored settings to default. Please advise.
Thank You
Exit Diablo IV and make sure the Battlenet App is shut down.
Then go to:
Documents\Diablo IV
Under here, find the file named:
LocalPrefs.txt
Either rename it, or delete it.
Then restart Battlenet. Then restart Diablo IV. This will force a fresh defaulted copy of the game preference settings.
You will be prompted to setup your Gamma again. Then test things and see if it works again.
If that fails you have something in the system setup that is causing a problem.
Good luck.
I deleted the file. I also got rid of the Online Drive copy. Likewise, I restarted, went to options. It looked the same. I changed one key and restored to defaults. I still can’t press a letter key.
Why did you go to options first? Did the keyboard not respond after clearing the file and simply starting a game?
Please clarify what you mean here if you can.
And what you do you mean by “letter key”?
You said this previously. Can you elaborate what you mean by “bound in key bindings”. Are you using keyboard macros or something?
If you are using any special keyboard binding software, remove it. Or reset the keyboard to defaults, or use a different keyboard as a test.
This problem is starting to sound like its coming from a hardware or driver or some other 3rd party program interfering with the game.
The steps I suggested to start with, should have resolved this issue, unless the problem is tied to the hardware another way. That means, its outside of the game’s control.
Under Options/Control/ Key Bindings, I see that from “Character” down to Clan Screen have values. None of these work in the game. I don’t have any non-standard keyboard. It is the one that comes with the laptop. It was working before I stopped playing. I have also re-installed the O/S thinking a file had been corrupted. I am re-installing again. This happens only in this game, and I remind you that ESC, TAB and / do respond in the game. I ordered a Bluetooth keyboard to see if that helps.
What is the exact brand and model of the laptop?
This is just one of the oddest things I have ever heard happening. lol
Any chance you have an external wired keyboard (usb) you could connect and try?
I know you got a Bluetooth one coming, but that would be the last thing I would consider testing with. A simple hardwired one would be a better test.
I found the problem to be a piece of security software. Please close this issue, it is solved.
Well, that does line up with my first post:
And apparently it was. Sorry it wasn’t obvious.
