Here are the major issues Anthem had.
Point 4. Unsatisfying Story and Characters is the only point we could argue about but its probably also the least important for these kinds of games.
Also Anthem had similar issues with classes where one class was decent amount of fun while others felt lacking
Lack of Content and Variety: Anthem was criticized for its lack of diverse content and activities. The game’s world felt repetitive, with limited mission types and environments, leading to a lack of long-term engagement.
Technical Problems and Bugs: Anthem was plagued by various technical issues, bugs, and crashes. These problems negatively impacted the overall gameplay experience and hindered players from enjoying the game.
Poor Loot System: The game’s loot system was considered unsatisfying, with inconsistent rewards and loot drops. This discouraged players from engaging in the game’s loot-focused progression system.
Unsatisfying Story and Characters: The narrative and character development in Anthem were criticized for being shallow and failing to engage players in a meaningful way. The lack of a compelling story left many players disconnected from the game’s world.
Endgame Content: The endgame content in Anthem was perceived as lacking depth and variety, which contributed to a lack of motivation for players to continue playing after completing the main storyline.
Communication and Transparency: BioWare faced criticism for a perceived lack of transparency and communication with the player community. Players felt uninformed about the game’s development roadmap and upcoming updates.
Monetization and Microtransactions: Anthem was criticized for its monetization practices, including the presence of microtransactions and concerns over a potentially pay-to-win model.
Yeah I think I’d say point 4 is invalid. Just speaking for myself here, but I thought the story was pretty good for an ARPG.
Also for point 7, I mean cmon. They have to make money off this game somehow and the initial $70-100 that we paid for it won’t be able to sustain it longterm. As long as they’re not putting pay for power stuff in their stores, I’m all for them monetizing the game.
All other points though… Yeah. Couldn’t agree more.
Yep it’s pretty much Anthem, with similar results (lots of initial hype with quick dropoff).
Probably a bigger disappointment, because Diablo franchise is a very famous franchise from a studio with lots of fans, whereas Anthem was a new concept. Which is also why you have people slavishly defending it and giving it endless second chances despite the low quality.
Anthem had great graphics too. What is good or innovative in this game outside of the graphics? (which I would argue really aren’t that great, and the game has massive issues with graphics compatibility, crashing, burning people’s cards, stuttering, etc. due to poor coding) Nothing.
They made so much money they can afford to sustain this game for years to come. Hilarious shill comment. Definitely dev in disguise - “game needs aggressive monetization to be sustained” - nah bro they need that to make more money certainly, but they also need a good product to stand a chance. The big profit and than some is already made. Unless they plan to pocket all the money, they can afford to pay the bills for Diablo for years to come.
Pretty similar on some aspect. i have fun playing anthem before i finish the game. same as D4.
Anthem have a really bad loot to chase RNG on top of RNG on top of RNG. similar crap like diablo 4 is.
Non-existent end game activities. Anthem end game is to rerun stronghold over and over again. D4 is NMD ‘open world’ activities mostly useless.
Dev don’t know what they were doing, look at how both clueless how they game work. D4 Dev just go back and forth with the patch.
You know, I made this same connection a few weeks back. Anthem was a game with a story that started out strong but finished horribly, just like DIV. It looks absolutely incredible, but the gameplay doesn’t feel good, just like DIV. There is nothing to do after a while, just like DIV.
The pay to win system was horrible. They had a few events where they gave some of those weapons and armor out for free, and my power level increased by the hundreds of %.
Again, the main problem is no meaningful end-game. No meaningful loot. No meaningful purpose. But hey, it looks amazing.
Lol… you actually think i’m a shill… HAH! I can’t take you seriously after that. Look at my post history, just because I don’t agree with every single point doesn’t mean I’m a White Knight/fanboy/shill. You guys throwing these words around like candy are ruining the weight of the term.
Also I don’t think you know what aggressive monetization is. Try looking up Diablo Immortal, Maplestory, Neverwinter, etc. to find that one out.
Pros who know (or were possibly in the room when Rod made the statement ) know that the strategic plan for D4 is to make it like Destiny. A live service game. It costs hundreds of millions to sustain a live service game over its lifecycle. You think Destiny ran itself for free back when blizzard owned the IP?
Anthem pisses me off because really all they needed to do was copy Mass Effect 3 MP but add quest hubs. Somehow they figured out how to turn victory into defeat.
People still to this day play ME3MP on PC it’s crazy. I hesitate going back because my Best of the Best profile is on Xbox and not PC and I’d hate to start from scratch but maybe it’s worth it.
Dude that’s a hilariously good idea. Anthem graphics in ME3 multi? Yes please.
I play ME3 multi every couple of years. It’s still so, so good. Even the mods (zombie, etc) are extremely fun.
There is one problem with that idea, and that is that EA/Bioware’s new engine (frostbite?) is so terrible compared to Unreal. Another reason ME Andromeda was a giant failure.
