Diablo 4 Data Corruption Error - Samsung 980 Pro M.2 Disconnecting Storage SSD / HDD - Unallocating - Departitioning Drive Space

Quick Update: Still broke;
Uninstalled Battle.net and Diablo, Manually deleted Battle.net and Blizzard folders in Program Files and Program Data. restarted; Reinstalled Battle.net on my 980 Pro D: Drive (mimicked Program Files (x86)) path, restarted, Reinstalled Diablo 4 on my 980 pro D: drive (mimicked Program Files (x86)) path, Restarted, Got to character select and it just corrupted again within 10 seconds.

Lets hope just putting both back on my OS SSD lets me play normally still.
I was just testing for the sake of testing since it’s been like 2 weeks.

I noticed this being an issue and tried extensively to figure it out.

Pre-Notice Yes, I never even launched the game before updating to the newest launch-day GPU Driver for the game, I DDU’ed in SafeMode, ensured Windows did not Install a base Driver when restarting (System Properties / View Advanced System Settings - Hardware - Device installation Settings - NO), and explicity installed NVIDIA GeForce Experience and grabbed the latest Game Ready Driver Version 535.98 2023-05-30

The game seems to randomly Unallocate 1 Megabyte MB of storage right before / while crashing. This effectively seems departition that 1MB from the rest of the Volume Regardless of SSD Storage Over Provisioning or Performance settings.

Sometimes you may crash instantly on loading/Queue, may crash on the character select screen not even touching or selecting anything, may crash after selecting the Characters and clicking play, and may even crash randomly moment into playing or many minutes into playing the game.

It seems that when this happens the Corrupted data mentioned may be that 1MB that is not long available to the drive. Through Basic Windows Disk Partitioning there was no way to actively Extend the main Volume/Partition of the SSD to reclaim that 1MB un-allocated.

I’ve actively tried clearing/Deleting the ProgramData Battle net and Blizzard Entertainment Files/folders, Attempted ā€œUpdatingā€ the game as it suggests in the
Battle net Launcher, attempted Scan and repairing the Game.

But, it either will give a ā€œWhoops something went wrong Messageā€ or being unable to find the target location error / it not existing in a weird inital case for me it was COMPLETELY Disconectting my drive.… weirdly though, where the Files would no longer be navigatiable via File Explorer nor CMD prompts Stating that the Location doesn’t exist… any location/folder/file on the drive. It would no longer Show in Samsung Magician (which is a consistent issue after the 1MB unallocates).

But, for some reason would still show the full partition as Online in Windows Disk Parititoning…

Tried Running in VARIOUS combinations all Blizzard / Battle net / Diablo IV - 4 Software / Applications as or not as Administrator regardless of my local accounts security settings, regardless of basic UAC, Regadless of File/Folder access security settings

I’ve additionally Deleted the ProgramData Battle net and Blizzard Entertainment Files/Folders, the installation path of the launcher; the game folders entirely, etc. Then went into Windows Uninstall and removed all lingering listings of any of the apps / software. Completely restarted the computer, reinstalled the Battle net Launcher, resintalled the game… and the same issues occured.

NO OVERLAYS were on, not a Battle net overlay, not a Discord overlay even if it were open or not, not steam overlays, no Rivatuner overlays, etc. All Services were set to bare-bones NVIDIA, Windows, Blizzard/battle net services if applicable, aside from audio service (Realtek / Creative Technology, or my FocusRite services). Additionally, to ensure most / if not all unecessary background processes were killed / stopped, I Used & also tested NOT USING specifically-explicitly-manually ONLY the program called ā€œProcessKillerā€ Version 1.0.0 (Details says 1.0)/ 2.0 (Whitelist.txt and the UI says 2.0) Provided ā€˜in’ Tronscript, Version 12.0.3 - reddit[DOT]com/r/TronScript , C:\Users\brand\Desktop\Tron v12.0.3 (2022-09-11)\tron\resources\stage_0_prep\processkiller\ by Reddit User reddit[DOT]com/user/cuddlychops06

I should note I only tried the Server Slam Beta before this and Had the SAME issue initally on the SAME Drive; however, Did not document what I did to ā€˜fix’ or stop the game from doing this before. It may have just fixed itself while still being on my 980 PRO.

I have since not being able to fix this after like 3 hours of troubleshooting, moved this to my C: Drive : (Local Disk) C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo IV

I got the same exact SSD and it died while playing whole day (around 12 hours).

That’s a first for me.

This is weird for me too, my computer started giving me blue screens again.

Is something wrong with the compatability of Samsung 980 Pro and diablo 4 or bcos diablo 4 cannot be installed in the Windows drive?

I had random bluescreen when i installed diablo 4 in the Windows drive on my Samsung 980 Pro. After I reinstalled windows and change my game folder to my 2nd drive Samsung 970 evo, it’s working again.

I have similar issues on a 970 EVO plus 1TB

The Samsung 980 Pro series of M.2 drives has a known hardware failure mechanism. Especially apparent in the 2TB versions.

This is a Samsung hardware problem. It is recommended to update the firmware of the M.2 device to the latest version before the drive eventually crashes and then becomes completely unusable.

Forum wont let me post source links. There are many links you can do your own search to reference on your own to get the facts.

I have been having the same issue for about a week or so now. I have played since the first Beta and never encountered any client stability errors or crashes.

I have reliably replicated this error a few times (10+X) on a Samsung 980 Pro (2TB), a SK Hynix Gold P31 (2TB), a WD Black SN850 (2TB), as well as a Seagate BarraCuda 10TB HDD.

This error is seemingly a client side one, not hardware related.

I’m running a WD Black SN850 (2TB).

Doesn’t seem to have a problem with D4.

Good to know, I appreciate the information. Yet the point still remains that this error is not specifically related to the Samsung 980 Pro.

Although it requires further testing with various hardware configs it can be safely said it is more likely than not related to the client & or the ā€œmemory leakā€ that has been present since test builds.

i still think the wise move is to update the firmware on the Samsung 980 Pro to the current revision. According to reports data corruption is a sign the device will undergo early failure. The drive is completely unrecoverable once this threshold has been passed.

The official Samsung fix is to update to the latest firmware from their website. If you have done the firmware upgrade and D4 still undergoes corruption then you can reasonably conclude its something with the game.

Until then, you have multiple variables and can never be 100% certain that the drive isn’t contributing to the problem.

Maybe some of you are having some memory errors, corrupting the data while in use.

If any of you are running XMP profiles on your RAM, try disabling it. XMP profiles are overclocks for the RAM.

Wouldn’t hurt to run a memory test as well.

Hi! I tried all of that and some more… It doesent work. Diablo 4 is broken for PC.

Corrected that for you.
