Diablo 4 - Age restrictions - how do they work?

Hello

I’ve created a Battle.net account for my daughter (age 15) and tried to get D4.
This is not possible due to the Age restriction as it seems.

Can I buy the game and gift it to her? or will she be unable to play this game untill she reaches 17?

e.g. do I have to bypass this (even tough parental guidance is setup) by tampering with her age in battle.net creation?

(and before someone rants about “shes not old enough” we are VERY much aware of this, we talk alot about the games and play them together incl. BG3 which is so much more “not age appropriate” and she handles it VERY well)…

Thanks all.

It’s a bit of a grey area to be honest.

(also apologies for (if any) Geographic confusion with PEGI, and wording, it’s 2:30am and I’m still awake after a full day at work, so hopefully I make sense and don’t bore you)

Personally, I’m not sure how the BNet will react to it being added to the account - but if I’m correct the law states a “minor” (I use this word as it’s how they word it) can not buy a game rated above their recommended age (12yr old buying an 18+ game), as the retailer by law cannot sell it to them (but let’s be honest some do).

However, that does not mean they can’t play it - if someone else was to buy it.

TL:DR

PEGI states:

“The Video Recordings Act 1984 only makes it illegal to supply a PEGI 12, 16 or 18 rated game to a person under those ages.”

As I recall this was only originally meant for physical, but I think it was expanded to digital as well in 2007, so it applies here as well.

It doesn’t make it illegal for a younger person to play a game if their parents let them.

That being said, again - I’m not 100% sure how BNet will react to such a thing being put on a minors account as it might just turn around and say “not gonna happen” and I believe that lying about the age on account creation violates some policy somewhere - it might be a damned if you do/don’t situation.

Options:

  • You could make a new account in your name and let her use it, however that’s account sharing.
  • You could buy the game and gift it, however it could fail and you’d be stuck with an unusable game.
  • Ask a GM/Blue/Customer Service Rep directly and hope for best.

Honestly, other than boring you (sorry) - I’m not sure what would be best in this instance. I wish I could give you a better idea.

goes hunting for coffee…

Personal Note: As for the rants… there are more than enough of us parents out there letting kids do things they’re not meant to, or watch things/play games above their age limit (Vaping, TikTok, etc) - and it’s the kids half the time actually lying about their age to get into them!!!.. hell, we did the same things growing up ourselves!
